Position opening at the University of Georgia – Farm Operations Professional I – Chavez.
Position SummaryThe incumbent directs daily farm operations, managing planting, irrigation, and harvesting to support the stone fruit and pecan research projects at the USDA‑ARS Fruit and Tree Nut Research Lab located at Byron, GA. The role involves coordination with faculty and project leaders to design and execute field experiments, ensuring uniform conditions for research studies.
Responsibilities- Operate farm tractors (≥50 horsepower) and other heavy equipment for planting, spraying, mowing, and harvesting.
- Plan and manage irrigation systems, pesticide applications, fertilizing, and pruning schedules.
- Scout orchards for disease and pest issues, monitor plant and soil nutrient levels, and maintain farm equipment.
- Collaborate with faculty and project leaders on field experiment design, execution, and data reporting.
- Assist in hiring, training, and supervising seasonal workers and interns, ensuring safety protocols.
- Minimum:
Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture, Horticulture, Agronomy, or related field. - Preferred:
Technical knowledge acquired through apprenticeship, 2‑year degree, professional certificate, or extensive farming experience. - Georgia Pesticide Applicator’s license (or ability to obtain within 90 days).
- Experience operating tractors (≥50 horsepower) and managing farm production procedures.
