Position OverviewThe Relief Veterinarian provides high-quality medical care to companion animals on a temporary or as-needed basis, supporting the hospital’s general practice and wellness services. This role is ideal for a licensed DVM seeking flexible scheduling while delivering compassionate, evidence-based veterinary care in a collaborative clinical environment.
Key Responsibilities- Provide comprehensive wellness and preventive care, including physical exams, vaccinations, parasite prevention, and client education
- Diagnose and treat common medical conditions in small animals
- Perform routine soft tissue surgeries and dental procedures, as applicable to hospital standards only as agreed upon by Relief DVM and Client
- Develop and implement diagnostic and treatment plans utilizing available in-house and external resources
- Accurately document medical records in accordance with hospital protocols and legal requirements
- Communicate effectively with clients regarding diagnoses, treatment options, prognoses, and preventive care
- Collaborate with veterinary technicians, assistants, and support staff to ensure efficient patient flow and high standards of care
- Adhere to hospital policies, safety protocols, and applicable state veterinary regulations
- Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM or VMD) degree from an AVMA-accredited veterinary school
- Active veterinary license in the state of practice (or ability to obtain)
- DEA license and state-controlled substance registration (or ability to obtain)
- Strong clinical and diagnostic skills in small animal general practice
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to adapt quickly to new teams, workflows, and hospital systems
- Flexible, short-term, or per diem assignments
- Shifts may vary by hospital needs and may include weekdays and/or weekends
- No long-term commitment required unless mutually agreed upon
