The purpose of this position is to support the daily operations of the animal shelter by ensuring the health, safety, and well-being of animals in the facility while maintaining a clean, sanitary, and organized environment. The role is responsible for providing compassionate care to sheltered animals including feeding, monitoring, and general husbandry while also assisting with adoptions and helping reunite lost pets with their owners.

This position plays a key part in maintaining shelter grounds, managing supplies and equipment, and keeping accurate records. When necessary, the employee must perform humane euthanasia in accordance with established procedures. Work is carried out under the direct supervision of the Animal Shelter Manager and is evaluated through observation and review of reports to ensure high standards of care and operational efficiency.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Responsible for cleaning and maintaining animal confinement areas, including disinfecting cages, feeding and watering animals, and conducting routine inspections to monitor their health, safety, and over all well-being.
  • Washing food and water bowls, laundering shelter linens, cleaning utensils, and ensuring that all areas of the facility remain sanitary.
  • Responsible for vaccination of animals, dog-temperament testing, & taking pictures of animals for website posting.
  • Encourages adoptions by assisting visitors with claiming or adopting animals, completing required paperwork.
  • Preparing and maintaining accurate records related to animals housed, claimed, adopted, or euthanized, as well as filing and retrieving information as needed.
  • Maintains supply inventories and requests materials to be ordered when needed.
  • Performing or assisting with the euthanasia of unadoptable or diseased animals and conducting decapitation for rabies testing, as well as disposing of deceased animals when required.
  • Weekend and after-hours on-call duties are REQUIRED, including rotating weekend schedules with other staff to feed animals and clean the shelter; and/or assisting with off-site adoption/rabies events.
  • During county emergencies or disasters, the employee may be assigned to work in shelters to care for pets and abandoned animals and assist with animal rescue efforts.
  • Responsible for providing direction to helpers, volunteers, temporary staff, or jail inmates.
  • Additional projects and responsibilities may be assigned at the discretion of Duplin County.
  • Responsible for answering telephones, greeting visitors, responding to general inquiries, providing information regarding adoptions and lost or found animals, and dispatches animal control officers when necessary.

Qualifications

Special Requirements

All employees should possess a valid North Carolina driver’s license. Must obtain Certified Euthanasia Technician (CET) certification, Certified Rabies Vaccinator (CRV), and NACA Shelter Safe Certification within six (6) months from date of employment. All employees may be requested to perform other duties as assigned. All employees may be required to assist county operations during a State of Emergency, disaster or other county event.
