Juneau Animal Rescue (JAR) iss seeking a Veterinarian/Clinic Director to oversee veterinary care for animals in our shelter and help lead JAR's veterinary clinic and medical programs.

We recognize that the right fit may look different for different candidates. JAR is open to both part-time and full-time arrangements, with schedule, responsibilities, and compensation structured around the successful candidate's availability, experience, and the needs of the organization.

About the Position

The Veterinarian/Clinic Director serves as JAR's primary veterinary medical authority and oversees the health and medical care of animals in our shelter and foster programs. The position also provides leadership and oversight for JAR's veterinary clinic, which currently provides spay/neuter, vaccinations, microchipping, and other limited veterinary services.

JAR is evaluating opportunities to expand veterinary services in the future. The successful candidate will have an opportunity to participate in those discussions and help determine what is practical and sustainable, but expansion of services is not a requirement of the position.

Responsibilities include:
  • Providing medical examinations, diagnosis, treatment, preventive care, and surgery for shelter animals.
  • Performing routine canine and feline spay/neuter surgeries and other procedures within the veterinarian's experience and JAR's capabilities.
  • Providing medical leadership and oversight for JAR's veterinary clinic.
  • Developing and maintaining medical protocols for shelter and clinic operations.
  • Supervising and supporting licensed veterinary technicians and other clinic staff.
  • Providing veterinary oversight and consultation to animal care staff and Animal Control Officers.
  • Overseeing prescription medications, controlled substances, medical records, and applicable veterinary regulatory requirements.
  • Assisting with animal cruelty and neglect investigations when veterinary expertise is required.
  • Working with JAR leadership on clinic operations, budgeting, staffing, partnerships, and future veterinary service opportunities.
  • Building and maintaining collaborative relationships with Juneau's veterinary community.
What We’re Looking For:

Applicants must have:
  • ADV Mo or VMD degree from an accredited veterinary school.
  • A current Alaska veterinary license or the ability to obtain Alaska licensure.
  • Experience providing medical and surgical care to companion animals.
  • The ability to perform routine canine and feline spay/neuter surgery.
  • Strong communication, clinical judgment, and organizational skills.
  • An interest in collaborative, mission-driven veterinary medicine.

Experience in shelter medicine, general practice, high-quality/high-volume spay/neuter, community medicine, emergency medicine, or veterinary leadership is welcomed. Previous shelter medicine experience is not required.
