Responsibilities

Department:
Animal Control

Pay Grade: 55, Non-Exempt

Starting hourly rate: $17.65

Prior experience working in an animal care role is recommended but not required.

High school diploma or equivalent.

Certifications, Licenses:

Must be able to be certified as a Shelter Technician.

Must be able to complete the State of Tennessee Euthanasia Pre-Certification Course within one year of employment.

Able to be certified as a State of Tennessee Euthanasia Technician.

Must have dependable transportation.

A pre-employment criminal background check is required.

GENERAL POSITION

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The following duties are normal for this position.

However, they are not to be construed as exclusive or all–inclusive. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each duty satisfactorily. Other duties may also be required or assigned.

Cleans kennels occupied by animals, including cleaning up urine, vomit, and feces.

Helps with light cleaning of offices, emptying trash, mopping floors and cleaning of restrooms.

Feeds animals and provides them with fresh drinkable water based on their own dietary needs.

Reports to the Assistant Director any potential health or behavioral problems involving animals in the County’s care.

Provides human companionship and enrichment for socialization purposes, such as providing stimulation from toys, treats, puzzles, and interaction with others.

Social interaction is a key with playing, walking, and petting animals.

Exercise pets, such as taking them on walks and watching them when they play in a supervised yard.

Assists in the maintenance of records that can include filing impound papers, filling out adoption contracts, and filing vaccination records.

Performs daily health and welfare rounds of all animals indicating current health, monitoring those animals diagnosed with a sickness, and documenting animal health progression to recovery.

Assists the Shelter Veterinarian with daily rounds, medical treatments, exams, vaccinations, and euthanasia.

Assists with and performs euthanasia of those animals deemed sick, injured, aggressive, or have behavioral issues and are deemed unadoptable.

May perform basic customer service duties such as answering phones, showing pets to prospective adoptive families, providing tours of facilities and answering questions about the animals being held at the shelter.

Assists customers with selecting a companion animal.

Other duties as assigned.

COUNTY ORGANIZATION

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Represents the Department and County to other County staff and members of the public.

Provides quality customer service to individuals needing directions or assistance.

Demonstrates the organization’s Core Values and adherence to the Ethics policy.

SUPERVISORY RELATIONSHIPS

  • This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
Qualifications

JOB QUALIFICATIONS – KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of:

Animal science and behavior as it relates to an Animal Shelter/Control environment.

Animal disease and disease prevention and treatment.

Pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, codes, and regulations.

Computer software consistent for this position.

Skill in:

Analyzing complex administrative information and issues, defining problems and evaluating alternatives, and recommending methods, procedures, and techniques for resolution of issues.

Organizational and time management to prioritize duties to accomplish a high volume of work product while adapting to constant changes in priority.

Applying judgment and discretion in resolving problems and interpreting policies and regulations.

Ability to:

Perform detailed work accurately and independently in compliance with stringent time limits requiring minimal direction and supervision.

Establish and maintain accurate records of assigned activities and operations.
