The assistant superintendent identifies disease and turf-health issues across the golf course and grounds. Mowing, rolling, golf-course setup, watering, and bunker maintenance form the daily conditioning work. The position also maintains clubhouse grounds and plans or installs annual and perennial landscape beds.

The course team takes part in larger improvement projects throughout the property. Work includes aerification, drainage, tree removal and pruning, bunker renovation, tee renovation, and improvements to maintenance buildings. Donald Ross designed the championship 18-hole course.

Irrigation work runs from spring startup through fall winterization. The assistant superintendent manages water use on greens, tees, fairways, and rough, then troubleshoots components, repairs leaks, and handles hand watering when course conditions require it.

The job manages fertilizer and pesticide applications, inventory, records, and equipment calibration. The position handles herbicides, insecticides, fungicides, and fertilizers safely, calibrates liquid and granular application equipment, and orders tools and materials from local and national vendors.

Winter operations add snow removal with trucks and skid-loader plows. Four separate maintenance buildings require organized equipment storage, and the role keeps those spaces ready for daily course work.

The assistant superintendent communicates with management, staff, and membership about course operations and championship conditioning. The assistant superintendent trains personnel in daily maintenance activities and safety practices, so the position includes hands-on turf work and crew leadership.

Edgewood Country Club is a private club with a full-service clubhouse, fine dining, banquet facilities, a driving range, and a short-game practice area. The property also has a swimming pool, three tennis courts, and three platform tennis courts. The assistant superintendent coordinates grounds within this broader club operation, not only on the golf course.

Four assistant superintendents have become Golf Course Superintendents in recent years. At Edgewood, the assistant superintendent role works within that documented internal progression while participating in industry seminars and continuing education on turf products and management practices.

The position requires a two-year or four-year degree in turf management or a similar field. The assistant superintendent obtains and maintains a Pennsylvania pesticide license through testing and yearly training, then applies that knowledge to regulated chemical handling and record keeping.

Course-maintenance experience includes irrigation-system operation, hand watering, fertilizer and pesticide calibration, inventory control, and safe operation of trucks and skid-loader plows. The job also requires organized records and careful handling of liquid and granular products.
