The Jefferson County Humane Society is seeking a compassionate, dedicated, and dependable Part-Time Humane Agent to join our team. This is an important community position responsible for responding to reports of animal cruelty and neglect, investigating complaints, educating the public, and advocating for animals who cannot speak for themselves.

The Humane Agent investigates complaints involving suspected animal cruelty, neglect, abandonment, and other animal-welfare concerns throughout Jefferson County. The position requires working directly with animal owners, witnesses, law enforcement, veterinarians, prosecutors, and members of the public.

This is a part-time position responding to urgent complaints on evenings and weekends, as needed.

• Investigate complaints of animal cruelty, neglect, abuse, and abandonment.
• Respond to calls and complaints regarding animals in distress.
• Conduct interviews with complainants, witnesses, animal owners, and other involved parties.
• Document investigations thoroughly through photographs, written reports, records, and evidence.
• Evaluate the condition and welfare of animals and determine appropriate action.
• Work cooperatively with local law enforcement, veterinarians, prosecutors, and other agencies.
• Assist with the removal and care of animals when legally authorized and necessary.
• Prepare investigative reports and documentation for potential criminal or civil proceedings.
• Appear in court and provide testimony when required.
• Educate members of the public about responsible animal ownership and Ohio animal-welfare laws.
• Maintain confidentiality and professionalism during sensitive investigations.
• Respond appropriately and compassionately to difficult and sometimes emotionally charged situations.
• Perform other duties related to the protection and welfare of animals.

• Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
• Ability to work flexible hours, including occasional evenings, weekends, holidays, and emergency calls.
• Ability to safely handle and interact with animals of various species and temperaments.
• Ability to pass a background check.

Humane Agent Certification/Training:

Applicants who already possess the required Ohio Humane Society Agent training are strongly encouraged to apply. Under Ohio law, qualification for appointment includes successful completion of a minimum of20 hours of training concerning the investigation and prosecution of animal cruelty and neglect, with required animal-husbandry instruction.

Training may be available for the right candidate, subject to the requirements for appointment and approval under Ohio law.

• Previous experience in animal welfare, animal control, veterinary medicine, law enforcement, investigations, or a related field.
• Experience handling animals in a shelter, veterinary, field, or enforcement setting.
• Knowledge of Ohio animal-welfare laws.
• Experience conducting investigations or preparing detailed reports.
• Prior Humane Agent, Animal Control Officer, law enforcement, or similar experience.
