The Small Animal Emergency service at NC State Veterinary Hospital provides around-the-clock, critical care for companion animals facing urgent medical crises. Supported by advanced diagnostic technology and board-certified specialists, the clinical team delivers rapid stabilization and specialized treatment for high-acuity veterinary patients.

• Emergency & Triage Care:
  Perform primary triage, patient assessment, stabilization, emergency treatments, CPR /life-saving interventions, and ongoing monitoring of critical and emergent patients.
• Advanced Patient Care:
  Provide skilled nursing care including venipuncture and catheter placement, transfusions, oxygen therapy, ECG , urinary and feeding tube management, wound care, anesthesia/sedation, pain management, fluid therapy, and care of complex medical, neurologic, trauma, respiratory, toxicologic, and extracorporeal patients.
• Diagnostics & Procedures:
  Perform and assist with diagnostic testing and emergency procedures, including in-house laboratory testing, blood gases, radiographs, ultrasound, drug screening, minor surgery, and pre-surgical stabilization. Safely calculate and administer high-risk medications, CRIs, fluids, and treatment therapies.
• Communication & Coordination:
  Coordinate patient care and workflow with clients, referring veterinarians, students, interns, residents, clinicians, and specialty services. Document and communicate patient information, diagnostics, treatments, and plans through hospital information systems while providing billing and referral support.
• Teaching, Safety & Hospital Operations:
  Orient, train, and coach staff and veterinary students while maintaining a clean, safe, and functional clinical environment. Follow hospital, infection control, OSHA , EHS , radiation safety, and other applicable policies and effectively utilize specialized emergency and patient-care equipment.
• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds with or without reasonable accommodations.

Completion of an accredited training program in the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience.

Some positions may require additional Training, Certifications, or Licensure.

• Experience as a veterinary assistant in a clinical setting; preferably at a teaching hospital.
• Demonstrated ability to effectively train, mentor, or support veterinary students, new team members, or clinical staff in a fast-paced healthcare environment.
• Experience using electronic veterinary medical record systems to document patient care, coordinate treatment plans, and communicate with multidisciplinary clinical teams.
