Position SummaryThe Quality Control Technician is responsible for implementing and maintaining quality assurance methods and procedures to ensure that aggregate products are produced in full conformance with applicable specifications, regulatory requirements, and customer expectations. This position performs laboratory and field testing of aggregate materials produced at quarry and processing operations, monitors production quality, and provides technical support to plant personnel and management.
The Quality Control Technician plays a critical role in maintaining product consistency, supporting operational efficiency, ensuring compliance with state DOT and industry specifications, and protecting the company's reputation for delivering high-quality construction materials. In addition to quality control responsibilities, this position is expected to support quarry and aggregate production operations through the safe operation of mobile and fixed equipment as directed.
Equipment operation duties may be performed during periods when quality control activities have been completed or when operational needs require additional support.
This position is primarily focused on aggregate quality control and testing; however, successful candidates must be willing and able to support production operations through the safe operation of heavy equipment as business needs require. The incumbent should expect to divide time between laboratory testing, field quality control activities, and operational support functions to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the quarry and aggregate production facilities.
The following duties are considered essential functions of this position. Other duties may be assigned.
Performs aggregate testing in accordance with ASTM, AASHTO, state DOT, and company quality control standards.
Collects representative samples from stockpiles, conveyors, processing equipment, haul trucks, railcars, and customer locations to evaluate product compliance.
Conducts laboratory and field testing including gradation analysis, moisture content, specific gravity, absorption, fractured faces, flat and elongated particles, Los Angeles Abrasion, Micro‑Deval, soundness, sand equivalent, and other required aggregate quality tests.
Monitors production processes and product quality throughout crushing, screening, washing, and stockpiling operations to ensure specification compliance.
Performs routine inspections of stockpiles and material handling practices to identify and prevent contamination, segregation, and product degradation.
Maintains quality control test schedules and performs daily testing of production materials to verify compliance with customer and regulatory requirements.
Selects, prepares, and submits samples requiring third‑party laboratory testing or certification and tracks results to completion.
Investigates quality‑related concerns and customer complaints by evaluating test data, production records, plant conditions, and field performance; identifies root causes and recommends corrective actions.
Provides technical guidance and support to plant managers, supervisors, equipment operators, and production personnel regarding quality standards, product specifications, and material performance.
Maintains accurate and timely records of testing activities, certifications, calibration logs, inspections, corrective actions, and quality reports in accordance with company and regulatory requirements.
Monitors laboratory equipment for proper operation and performs routine maintenance, calibration, and verification of testing instruments.
Assists in evaluating new material sources, production methods, and process improvements designed to enhance product quality and operational efficiency.
Maintains laboratory, testing equipment, vehicles, and work areas in a safe, clean, organized condition.
