Quality Control Structural Steel Coatings Inspector
The Quality Control Structural Steel Coatings Inspector is responsible for inspecting, testing, and verifying surface preparation and protective coating applications on structural steel products to ensure compliance with project specifications, industry standards, and quality requirements. This role works closely with production, blasting, painting, and project management teams to maintain high-quality workmanship and customer satisfaction.
Key Responsibilities:- Inspect structural steel before, during, and after blasting and coating operations
- Verify surface preparation standards, cleanliness, and blast profiles
- Measure and document coating thickness, adhesion, environmental conditions, and curing requirements
- Ensure coatings meet project specifications, customer requirements, and industry standards
- Maintain detailed inspection reports, quality records, and documentation
- Identify non-conformance issues and assist with corrective actions
- Monitor proper handling, storage, and labeling of coating materials
- Communicate quality concerns with painters, supervisors, and management teams
- Assist with customer inspections and audits as needed
- Promote and enforce workplace safety and quality standards
- High school diploma or GED required
- Experience in industrial painting, coatings inspection, or structural steel manufacturing preferred
- Knowledge of coating systems, surface preparation, and inspection procedures
- Ability to read blueprints, specifications, and technical documents
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
- Ability to work independently and communicate effectively with production teams
Skills:
- SSPC or AMPP Coatings Inspector certification preferred
- NACE certification preferred
- Experience using coating inspection equipment including DFT gauges, profile gauges, and environmental monitoring tools
- Familiarity with ASTM, SSPC, AISC, and customer coating standards
- Forklift or aerial lift certification is a plus
- Ability to stand, walk, climb ladders, and inspect large steel assemblies
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally
- Ability to work in industrial environments
- Comfortable working at varying temperatures
This position works in structural steel fabrication facilities, blast and paint shops, and outdoor yard environments with exposure to industrial equipment, coatings materials, dust, noise, and changing weather conditions.
