JOB SUMMARYThe Birmingham Police Department is seeking well-qualified, motivated Statistical Analysts to collect, organize, validate, analyze, and present data to support departmental operations, planning, and decision-making. Employees coordinate data collection; obtain and maintain information from governmental, census, housing, operational, and other databases; review data for accuracy and completeness; and use established statistical, database, spreadsheet, and mapping methods to conduct descriptive and inferential analyses.
They identify trends, patterns, relationships, and resource needs and prepare maps, charts, reports, presentations, and responses to statistical information requests. Employees also communicate technical findings in practical terms to departmental staff, partner agencies, the public, and other audiences. Within a law enforcement setting, Statistical Analysts analyze police, public-safety, criminal justice, and other law‑enforcement data to identify crime patterns, trends, hotspots, relationships, and operational or resource needs.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSThe following are job-related qualifications that are required for employment consideration for this position:
College coursework in Statistics
College coursework in Research Methods
Experience using Microsoft Office suite including Excel, Access, PowerPoint, etc. and/or other database software.
Willingness to subject to a background check.
Willingness to subject to a polygraph examination.
Applies statistical methods to investigate and identify solutions to problems such as criminal activity/policing efforts, community development, disaster preparation/recovery, etc.
Receives requests from the public or from other agencies/departments to provide various descriptive statistics (e.g., number of crimes committed in an area, housing vacancy rates, neighborhood strength).
Oversees the collection and management of data to be used in statistical analyses by accessing databases and pulling data from a variety of sources, sending staff out to the field to collect data, receiving and reviewing collected data for accuracy, and entering data into databases and spreadsheets.
Prepares data files to be uploaded into data management software by pulling relevant variables/data from a variety of sources to be analyzed.
Conducts complex statistical analyses on data (e.g., time series analysis, trend projection, regression, correlation, and analysis of variance) in order to make inferences about the collected data.
Presents the results of statistical analyses to a variety of audiences verbally and in written reports by preparing various visual aids and presentations.
Presents the results of statistical analyses to appropriate personnel and/or groups in order to present and identify the practical implications of the results of statistical analyses.
Job is primarily sedentary involving sitting for long periods of time, but may involve occasional walking or standing for extended periods. May involve occasional light lifting of items or objects weighing up to 25 lbs.
WORK ENVIRONMENTWork is conducted both indoors in office setting as well as occasional field visits to external sites. Work involves use of standard office equipment, such as a computer, phone, copier, etc.
