Job Description Summary

Perform complex laboratory procedures and qualitative tests. Teaches and supervises performance of less complex laboratory procedures. Operates and maintains a variety of mechanical, electrical and optical laboratory equipment (a few examples include cell culture incubators, gel electrophoresis, and PCR machines). Performs routine examination and testing of rodent subjects for research purposes. Prepares laboratory animals for behavioral tests and drug treatments. Provides care and breeding of experimental animals.

Records and analyzes results of research experiments or procedures. Experience with Excel or comparable software for colony tracking.

MUSC Minimum Training and Experience Requirements

A high school diploma and two years work experience in a clinical or research setting; a bachelor's degree in chemistry, biology, or other natural, life or health care science may be substituted for the two years of required experience.

Job Duties
  • 30% - Conduct animal experiments and testing, including care and breeding of rats, genotyping by PCR, drug injections, collection of animal tissues, and isolation of various types of primary mammalian cells from animal tissues.
  • 20% - General lab maintenance, organization, and inventory, including ordering of lab supplies, instrument maintenance, reagent preparations and logging incoming samples/plasmids/reagents.
  • 20% - Perform cell culture, RNA, and protein sample preparations, Western blotting, ELISA, flow cytometry, and real-time RT-PCR assays.
  • 20% - Carry out histological procedures, immunohistochemical staining and microscopic analysis, immunofluorescence and confocal microscopy.
  • 10% - Maintain accurate laboratory records of experiments. Will be responsible for presenting results to PI in individual and group meetings.
