Postdoctoral Associate in Next Generation Diagnostics

The laboratory of Dr. Diego Diel (Diel Lab) within the Department of Population Medicine and Diagnostic Sciences at Cornell University, College of Veterinary Medicine, is seeking Postdoctoral Associate candidates. The person hired into this position will be working on a Cornell Future of American Agriculture Initiative‑funded project focused on developing next‑generation diagnostics for pathogens affecting livestock. The project will focus on the development of Ampli Seq based multiplex assays and on the development of bioinformatics pipelines for rapid pathogen detection and identification.

Possibilities to work on other projects within the Diel Lab focusing on viral pathogenesis, virus host‑interactions and vaccine development in a collaborative fashion also exist.

Postdoctoral Associates receive competitive salaries according to the Cornell University Postdoctoral Associate stipend system. Start date is negotiable; the position has a duration of one‑year with options for renewal. Position expected start date in November 2026.

The successful candidate will work on this project to develop next‑generation disease panel‑based diagnostics together with other members of the Diel Lab with potential for collaboration with staff at the Virology Laboratory in the Animal Health Diagnostic Center and across Cornell University and beyond. Preference will be given to applicants with previous experience in diagnostic assay development, next‑generation sequencing and bioinformatics pipeline development.

A DVM or PhD is required for this position. This position will require attention to detail, independence, leadership abilities, problem‑solving skills, and a passion for hands‑on wet lab and computational work. Strong interest in all aspects of the scientific study process is required and possibilities exist at Cornell University to pursue further training in research, teaching, and leadership skills. Candidates must possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills to work effectively in our team, as well as the willingness to learn new methods and techniques and to collaborate with others as the projects evolve.

Because handling of clinical samples will be required the selected candidate must receive the pre‑exposure rabies prophylaxis vaccination series prior to or immediately after hire or provide documentation of current vaccination.

Pay Range:

$63,480.00 - $71,000.00. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Alternative Pay Range:

$62,232.00 - $88,745.00
