Research Associate
- Plowright Laboratory

The Plowright Lab in the Department of Public and Ecosystem Health at Cornell University seeks applications for a Research Scientist. This position is supported through a transdisciplinary NIH-funded research program within the Center for Research in Emerging Infectious Diseases (CREID). We coordinate field studies and experiments related to changes to immune function in bats driven by global ecological changes. The Research Scientist will lead, organize, and conduct bat experiments at Cornell University and co-lead field research to understand bat responses to global change and how these responses influence pathogen spillovers.

The Research Scientist will also coordinate fieldwork conducted by local research teams in Indonesia and Bangladesh. Collaborators will include colleagues at Johns Hopkins University, Wildlife Conservation Society, Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine, Cornell Weill School of Medicine, Cornell University College of Human Ecology, and Cornell College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.

Responsibilities
  • Lead the design, planning, and execution of bat experiments at Cornell University and co-lead field research focused on understanding how bats respond to global change and how these responses influence pathogen spillover.
  • Help design spatial and temporal sampling strategy in collaboration with geospatial scientists, ecologists, and epidemiologists.
  • Coordinate field operations and communication with international research teams in Indonesia and Bangladesh.
  • Oversee collection, processing, management, and quality control of biological and ecological datasets.
  • Lead analysis, interpretation, manuscripts, and presentations arising from the experimental and field components, in collaboration with the team.
  • Coordinate biomarker development tools across the larger team.
  • Lead donor reporting.
Requirements
  • This position requires a PhD in disease ecology, ecological immunology, epidemiology, veterinary medicine, ecology, or similar fields.
  • Demonstrated experience independently conducting animal or wildlife research; designing experiments; leading field teams; handling and sampling wildlife; working with infectious-disease or physiological/ecological data; supervising junior personnel; and managing complex, multi-partner research projects.
  • Ability to develop, adapt, and apply quantitative methods to answer ecological questions.
  • A strong record of conducting independent research and scholarly activities, including publication in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary research team.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities in a collaborative, fast-paced research environment.
  • Experience in the management of research, scientific, or academic projects.
  • Creative and critical-thinking skills with a demonstrated ability to develop innovative research approaches.
  • Willingness to be based in Ithaca, NY
  • Ability to travel internationally and spend time conducting fieldwork in Indonesia and Bangladesh.

Salary and Benefits

Salary Range: $65,000 - $90,000

This position is eligible for endowed benefits.
