About the Role:

This role is responsible for ensuring the successful operation of the department's teaching and research laboratories. The position supports student learning and faculty scholarship by managing laboratory resources, coordinating the preparation and delivery of instructional labs, overseeing chemical and equipment procurement, and maintaining efficient, safe, and compliant laboratory and stockroom operations. Oversee preparation and execution of setup for all labs as assigned by the department chair, including: the preparation of reagents/ solutions/unknowns;

proper setup of teaching lab equipment and supplies prior to lab sessions; maintaining lab cleanliness (dismantling equipment, removing and disposing of unused chemicals following proper safety guidelines, cleaning and storing glassware, cleaning all lab work areas); reset of the lab following each lab session.

Support Laboratory Coordinator with preparation and execution of their assigned labs as needed.

Ensure the correct collection, packaging, and disposal of hazardous waste is completed in compliance with appropriate regulations (in cooperation with Laboratory Coordinator).Prepare orders for chemicals, glassware, supplies and equipment associated with all teaching labs, interacting with vendors as needed to secure the best price.

Maintain database of department chemical inventory.

Support the Laboratory Coordinator in the day-to-day supervision of student stockroom workers, including IWS / FWS , including training students as needed in hazardous waste procedures and teaching lab reset/setup practices.

Assist the Laboratory Coordinator to ensure stockroom staffing is covered while teaching labs are in session.

Support faculty-initiated development, review, and revision of lab procedures and experiments.

Support research-active faculty with procurement of supplies and chemicals as needed, interacting with vendors as needed to secure the best price.

Assist Laboratory Coordinator with annual inventory of department equipment and supplies (in conjunction with the Director of Instrumentation).Meet with course coordinators prior to fall and spring semesters review specific course needs and changes that impact lab preparation.

The Successful candidate will have:

A minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in chemistry or related field with two years of experience in laboratory preparation.

A sound knowledge of the safe handling of chemicals and hazardous waste.

Good interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills. The ability to rapidly respond to questions and needs of faculty, students, staff, and visitors to department.

Sufficient computer skills to learn lab- and database-specific software in addition to the normal work word processing, spreadsheet, email, and internet software.

Excellent organizational skills and the ability to guide student workers to complete tasks in a timely manner.
