Description

The
Engelhardt
laboratory
at
the
University
of
Alabama
at
Birmingham (UAB)
is
seeking a
dedicated
and
skilled
temporary
full-time
Veterinary
Technician
to
support
animal
care
and
research
activities.
The
successful
candidate
will
assist
with
clinical
care,
procedures,
and
general
husbandry
to
ensure
the
health
and
welfare
of
research
animals
in
compliance
with
institutional
and
regulatory
guidelines.
Depending
on
funding
acquisition,
this
position
has
the
potential
to
go
full-time.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide daily care, monitor, and health assessments of research animals.
  • Assist veterinarians and research staff with clinical procedures, treatments, and surgeries.
  • Administer medications and collect biological samples as directed.
  • Monitor animals for signs of illness, distress, or abnormal behavior and report findings promptly.
  • Maintain accurate records related to animal health, treatments, and procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with IACUC, USDA, and institutional policies and guidelines.
  • Support facility operations, including sanitation, equipment maintenance, and inventory management.
  • Assist with training of research personnel on proper animal handling and care techniques.

Pay: $18.00 per hour

Qualifications

Qualifications
  • Associate's degree in a related field OR High School diploma or GED and two (2) years of related experience required. Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.
  • Prior experience working with laboratory animals or in a veterinary setting preferred.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Familiarity with rodent handling, dosing, and sample collection.
  • Understanding of IACUC regulations and animal welfare standards.
Work Conditions
  • Ability to lift, carry, and handle animals and equipment as required.
