Appointment Type:
Classified – Provisional. This is a Temporary Provisional ( TPV ) position excluded by the Charter from the competitive Civil Service examination process. It is considered “at will” and shall serve at the discretion of the of the Department Head. This position will be subject to the Permanent Civil Service Examination process at a later date. Successful participation in the Permanent Civil Service Examination and selection through an open competitive process is needed in order to be considered for the permanent appointment.

City College of San Francisco is looking to recruit full time, (40 hours/week), full year (260 days/fiscal year) Institutional Police Officers.

Under the direction of the Chief of Police or his/her designee, the Institutional Police Officer works in the San Francisco Community College District Police Department and acts as a peace officer pursuant to Section 830.32(a) of the California Penal Code and Section 72330 of the California Education Code. The San Francisco Community College District Police Department is a Peace Officers’ Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) participant.

The officer’s primary functions are to provide protection of life and property and to enforce state and local laws and college policies within the jurisdiction of San Francisco Community College District campuses.

In accordance with District policy, the San Francisco Community College District Police Department is a sworn unarmed department. Employees are required to sign a memorandum acknowledging their understanding of the District’s policy in this regard.

This is not a remote work position and requires office/on-site presence.

Job Duties

Essential Functions

  • Administers first aid to students, staff and/or visitors for the purpose of providing immediate emergency medical care.
  • Arrests individuals engaging in illegal activities for the purpose of apprehending suspects to prevent further illegal activities.
  • Collaborates with community agencies (e.g. law enforcement, courts, health care, etc.) for the purpose of addressing individual cases and/or taking action regarding investigations, criminal activities, gang activities, vandalism, etc. for the safety and security of the college sites.
  • Communicates safety and security policies and enforcement procedures to students, staff and visitors for the purpose of ensuring their understanding of such information, the potential consequences of violation, and building a community relationship.
  • Enforces applicable laws for the purpose of responding appropriately in accordance to federal, state District, and municipal laws, rules, and policies.
  • Enforces college policies as necessary (e.g. student ticketing, disciplinary issues, etc.) for the purpose of implementing campus Police Department processes and student code of conduct.
  • Escorts students, assigned personnel and/or visitors for the purpose of providing safety and providing site security.
  • Implements safety escorts (e.g. students, staff, visitors, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring safe movement on campus.
  • Investigates potential campus crimes and/or student related community incidents for the purpose of resolving conflicts, taking appropriate action, and/or referring to outside agency for resolution.
  • Participates in unit meetings, in-service training, workshops, etc. for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform job functions.
