Salary: $57,491.20 Annually
Position Summary:Responsible position involving the guarding of arrestees in a detention facility; is responsible for overseeing the operation of the detention facility during the assigned work period. A Corrections Officer assumes responsibility for all needs of the prisoner during detention; providing food, medical services, and personal articles; and transporting prisoners to other detention facilities. Work involves the exercise of mature judgment and knowledge of Law Enforcement techniques and procedures.
Essential Functions:- Responsible for the care, custody, and control of prisoners.
- Inspects locks and security devices to detect tampering; keeping inspection log.
- Observes the behavior of arrestees to prevent disturbances and escapes; ascertains the need for additional services.
- Collects and holds personal effects of prisoners; gives receipts and records such according to accepted procedures. Responsible for the safekeeping of any property removed from prisoners.
- Performs booking procedure; fingerprints, takes mug shots, allows telephone calls, bonding procedures, and releases prisoners when authorized.
- Maintains daily activity log when necessary.
- Transports prisoners to detention facilities; acts as a guard, maintains order and discipline.
- Supervises trustees and custodial personnel.
- Performs general custodial and maintenance activities; sweeps/dusts floors; cleans and unclogs urinals and commodes, in the absence of custodial personnel.
- Participates in internal staff meetings.
- Maintains certification requirements as directed by the State.
- Maintains firearms re-qualifications as directed by the Department.
- Attends and maintains all training as directed by the Department.
- Handles administrative duties assigned by shift supervisor (such as mail distribution, delivery of council agendas, and city-related escorts).
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned by supervisor.
- Must possess a high school diploma or its equivalency.
- Must be certified in the State of Florida in the Correctional Officers Training Program or meet all requirements of the State Police Minimum standards, as authorized in F.S.S. 943.13.
- May work rotating shift assignments.
- Must possess good physical condition as evidenced by the ability to pass a class “A” physical examination.
- Must be able to understand and follow written or verbal instructions.
- Must possess a valid State of Florida driver’s license with a clean driving record.
- Must pass a background investigation, which includes, but is not limited to, criminal history screening, psychological evaluation, polygraph examination, and Driver’s License review.
