  • Job Title: Credible Messenger – Overnight
  • Program: Safe Healing Center (SHC) / DYD-Regulated Program
  • Reports To: Program Manager
  • Employment Status: Full-Time, Non-Exempt
  • Schedule: Overnight shifts (typically evening through early morning hours; includes weekends and holidays)
  • Salary Range: $24–26/hour, based upon experience
    (This position is part of our future hiring plan, with openings expected to begin in late May or early June 2026)
Position Summary:

The Overnight Credible Messenger (OCM) is a frontline, relationship-centered role responsible for maintaining safety, stability, and supportive presence during overnight hours at the Safe Healing Center. The Overnight Credible Messenger builds trust through consistency, lived experience, and trauma-informed practice while ensuring residents are supported, supervised, and safe during nighttime operations.

This role emphasizes de-escalation, crisis response, emotional support, and environmental safety while reinforcing program expectations, accountability, and healing-centered values.

Core Responsibilities Overnight Resident Support & Engagement
  • Maintain a calm, consistent, and supportive overnight presence.
  • Provide emotional support and guidance to residents experiencing stress, anxiety, or sleep-related challenges.
  • Build trust through respectful communication and appropriate mentorship.
  • Model healthy coping strategies, accountability, and positive behavior.
  • Respond to resident needs while maintaining professional boundaries.
Safety, Supervision & Facility Monitoring
  • Maintain active supervision of residents throughout overnight hours.
  • Conduct required room checks, bed checks, head counts, and walkthroughs per policy.
  • Monitor facility security, entrances/exits, and overnight activity.
  • Ensure compliance with curfews, quiet hours, and overnight expectations.
  • Identify and immediately report safety concerns, maintenance issues, or policy violations.
Crisis Response & De-escalation
  • Respond promptly to overnight crises, conflicts, or emotional distress.
  • Utilize trauma-informed and restorative de-escalation techniques.
  • Follow emergency, medical, and critical incident protocols as required.
  • Notify on-call supervisors and document incidents in accordance with policy.
Documentation & Shift Handover
  • Complete accurate overnight logs, incident reports, and required documentation.
  • Document resident interactions, disturbances, and interventions.
  • Provide clear shift handoff communication to morning/day staff.
  • Maintain confidentiality and compliance with HIPAA and program standards.
Collaboration & Professional Conduct
  • Coordinate with Housing Managers, Case Managers, Clinicians, and supervisors as needed.
  • Participate in required meetings, trainings, and supervision sessions.
  • Maintain professionalism, reliability, and accountability during independent overnight work.
  • Uphold all SHC and DYD policies and procedures.
Required Qualifications
  • Lived experience relevant to the population served (justice-impacted, system-involved, or community violence impacted).
  • Valid California Driver’s License, reliable vehicle, and current auto insurance coverage.
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Ability to work independently and make sound decisions overnight.
  • Strong observational, communication, and documentation skills.
  • Ability to remain calm and effective during emergencies or crises.
  • Willingness to work overnight shifts, weekends, and holidays.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior experience in overnight residential, shelter, reentry, or supportive housing settings.
  • Experience as a Credible Messenger, peer mentor, or youth support professional.
  • Training or experience in trauma-informed care and crisis intervention.
  • CPR/First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain).
  • Bilingual or multilingual skills preferred.
Training & Compliance Requirements
  • Completion of DYD-mandated and SHC-required trainings.
  • Trauma-Informed Care and De-escalation Training.
  • Crisis Intervention and Emergency Response Training.
  • Mandated Reporter Training.
  • Background clearance, TB testing, and county-required compliance checks.
Physical & Environmental Requirements
  • Ability to remain awake, alert, and attentive during overnight hours.
  • Ability to conduct frequent walking rounds and remain on feet for extended periods.
  • Ability to respond quickly to emergencies.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds.
  • Work in a residential overnight environment with youth and young adults.
