SUMMARY:

The Armed Campus Safety Officer is dedicated to providing a safe campus environment for students, faculty, staff and visitors.

Armed Campus Safety Officers perform numerous duties to assist in the security of the entire campus community. The responsibilities of an Armed Campus Safety Officer are performed in an ethical manner consistent with the University’s mission, vision, and values which include diversity, equity and inclusion.

This position non-sworn.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Act as a first responder to all emergencies on campus to protect life and property.
  • Provide great customer service. Strive to exceed the needs of University, students, faculty, staff and visitors.
  • Demonstrate and promote the values of the University.
  • Visibly patrol campus on both foot and in a marked vehicle.
  • Observe, identify, and report suspicious person(s) and/or situations.
  • Complete detailed and accurate written communications, including incident reports.
  • Ensure that unauthorized persons leave the university when warranted.
  • Perform escorts for students, faculty and/or staff when requested.
  • Provide security at special events, functions and/or for dignitaries.
  • Report safety concerns involving buildings, structures, yards and parking lots.
  • Maintain and utilize applicable security systems such as, but not limited to, card access systems (Pro Watch), Closed Circuit Television (NUUO), and Emergency Notification (RAVE).
  • Provide First Aid, Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and use an Automatic External

MANDATORY QUALIFICATIONS and SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS:

  • The Armed Campus Safety Officer will have been a member of a local, state or federal law enforcement agency as a sworn law enforcement officer.
  • Served as a local, state or federal law enforcement officer and separated from service in good standing.
  • Must pass a background investigation, to include criminal history and driving record.
  • Ability to work independently and exercise good judgement and common sense appropriate to related circumstance.
  • Must possess the ability to understand the Use of Force continuum and the use of deadly force.
  • Demonstrate the ability to properly assess and take action in a life-threatening situation.

    Possess the ability to appropriately discharge a firearm in a life-threatening situation.
  • Comply with Campus Safety department policy in situations involving the use of deadly force.
  • Demonstrate proficiency on the MCOLES Course of Fire for Active law Enforcement Officers as mandated by the department.
  • Must be able to work an irregular schedule, with no set days off. Duty shifts may include working days, afternoons and/or midnights. May be required to work weekends and holidays. May be required to work additional hours during peak times. May be required to work mandatory overtime as determined by the operating needs of the Department.

MANDATORY DOCUMENTATION

REQUIRED:

A letter or certificate stating that you are a graduate of an approved Police Officers Standards and Training (POST) and/or local or state police academy.

A letter of recommendation from the previous Police Chief or Command Officer indicating that you served as a local, state or federal law enforcement officer and separated from service in good standing.
