Job Details- Location:
Salem, KY - Requisition :
- Pay Range: $25.13 - $37.69 per hour
- Residence requirement: within 60‑minute driving distance from the Salem warehouse, 221 E Main St.
- Installs, troubleshoots, tests, splices, repairs, and maintains telephone equipment and general network equipment, customer premise equipment, Video/CATV/DBS, fiber optic/copper facilities, and other TDS products & services for new and existing customers.
- Installs, configures, maintains, and repairs Key Systems, PBX, Centrex Systems, and other business systems such as fiber terminals, ISPs, ISDN, DSL, T‑1s, and/or DS3s.
- Identifies the location of defective cable using test equipment and repairs buried, aerial, underground, and customer cable.
- Locates cable and fiber in response to customer requests and/or construction needs.
- Performs pole climbing and operates construction equipment as required.
- Marks company underground and buried facilities to prevent damage and keeps an orderly log of all locate requests in the exchange area.
- Performs cable fault acceptance tests on newly constructed facilities.
- Provides troubleshooting support techniques and corrections, and responds to “trouble” dispatches.
- Provides high‑level support for enhancing and maintaining record systems (cross connects, line groups, network elements, etc.).
- Provides excellent customer service and proactively educates and sells TDS products and services to customers.
- Performs project management of system installations and related functions as requested by supervisor.
Required Qualifications
- 1+ year basic technical telecommunications experience – OR – current/prior military service with honorable discharge.
- 6+ months of basic fiber optic and/or copper cable splicing, repair, installation, or switch training.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to maintain DOT requirements for operating vehicles.
- Compliance with TDS attendance guidelines to meet business needs.
- Must complete customer‑specific requirements, such as background checks, upon hire.
- Availability for on‑call/standby responsibilities; willingness to work overtime and travel occasionally.
- Pass Safety Course curriculum upon hire.
- Strong technical understanding of fiber and copper plant installation and troubleshooting.
- Understanding of telecommunication products and services, including inside wiring, internet, bonding, grounded systems, data concepts, fiber optics, video/CATV/DBS installation, inventory systems, cable locating, battery maintenance, and more.
- Practical knowledge of computer applications: databases, trouble/repair/dispatch systems, plant record systems, MS Outlook, Word, Excel, Explorer, and CD‑ROMs.
- Ability to work and make decisions independently with little or no supervision.
- Demonstrated customer service and sales skills; effective verbal and written communication.
- Proven organizational and multitasking skills.
- Ability to operate vehicles with manual transmissions.
The associate regularly sits, stands, writes, and operates a computer keyboard, standard office equipment and telephone. Communication with customers is frequent. The associate often moves about, reaches for items, stoops, kneels, crouches, or crawls, and may balance or climb. Frequently lifts or moves up to 50 pounds and occasionally up to 100 pounds. The job may be performed outdoors, in mechanical/equipment rooms, and in possible extreme weather conditions.
Exposure to moving mechanical parts and heavy equipment occurs regularly.
