Mechanic - Field Technician

Primary Function

This skilled position involves troubleshooting and repairing heavy‑duty diesel engine equipment, manual transmissions, electronic engine controls, electrical and hydraulic systems. The candidate will maintain a fleet of heavy equipment, interpret instructions in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form, define problems and draw valid conclusions. The role requires strong mechanical skills, flexibility on schedules, and results orientation.

• Ability to work day or night shift as needed to make repairs necessary in the field and perform preventive maintenance to increase service life of equipment;
• Ability to weld and use torches;
• Maintain a courteous and professional manner with co‑workers, customers, and the public;
• Ability to be flexible with last minute schedule changes, location changes, time of shift changes;
• Overtime work may be required;
• Initiative to perform/assist with other positions for job completion;
• Analyzes malfunctions and repairs, rebuilds, and maintains equipment;
• Operates and inspects machines or equipment to diagnose defects;
• Dismantles and reassembles equipment using hoists and hand tools;
• Examines parts for damage or excessive wear using micrometers and gauges;
• Replaces defective engines and subassemblies such as transmissions;
• Tests overhauled equipment to ensure operating efficiency (must be able to operate all equipment);
• Welds broken parts and structural members;
• Should have skills in basic fabrication;
• Performs record keeping of time and parts used on the appropriate forms and/or tablet;
• Performs general cleaning of work areas and maintenance areas;
• Assists other maintenance department staff in performing duties necessary to assure the efficiency of operations of vehicles;
• Ability to follow verbal and written instruction;
• Ability to do basic math;
• Ability to understand and carry out detailed written or oral instructions; and
• All other duties as assigned.

• High school graduate, G.E.D., or equivalent studies/experience (preferred);
• Excellent communication skills;
• Great attention to detail and stress tolerance;
• Must be willing to work weekends and extended hours;
• 5 or more years’ experience in heavy equipment with computer diagnostic ability;
• Must own tools;
• Vocational / Technical School or certification preferred;
• Specialized training in the repair and replacement of heavy vehicle components preferred;
• Proficiency in the use of shop tools required and ownership of mechanic set;
• Ability to weld preferred;
• Pass pre‑employment drug screen and criminal background check;
• Pass a pre‑employment “Fit for Work” physical;
• Be able to provide valid documentation for the I‑9 immigration document;
• Display a professional and courteous attitude to co‑workers, supervisors and the general public at all times;
• Report to work at the designated start time;
• Must be willing to travel and work away from home when required. This job is for a portable paving crew and supporting quarries operations both surface & underground requiring extensive travel;
• Be willing to work nights and weekends when necessary;
• Be able to work overtime when required;
• Maintain current driver’s license that meets state requirements;
• Have a Motor Vehicle Record that meets company standards;
• Be willing to work outdoors in extreme temperatures, both hot and cold;
• Must be able to physically stand long periods of time and use traffic control devices for extended periods of times;
• Strictly adhere to safety requirements and procedures as outlined in the Employee Handbook;
• Have the willingness to work in a team environment and assist co‑workers or supervisors with other duties as required;
• Wear personal protective equipment (PPE) in designated operations and production areas as stated by OSHA and / or MSHA.
