Supervising Diesel Mechanic

We are seeking a qualified candidate for the position of Supervising Diesel Mechanic for the Department of Public Works.

Under the direction of the Department of Public Works, the Supervising Diesel Mechanic is responsible for overseeing and performing the maintenance, diagnosis, repair, and servicing of the Township’s diesel and gasoline-powered vehicles, heavy equipment and related machinery.

The successful candidate will supervise and direct employees engaged in mechanical maintenance and repairs while ensuring that all vehicles and equipment are maintained in safe, reliable and operational condition.

Essential Duties and

Responsibilities include:

  • Supervises, directs, and assigns work to employees performing mechanical repairs, preventive maintenance, and related activities
  • Performs and oversees the diagnosis, maintenance, repair, and servicing of Township diesel and gasoline-powered vehicles and equipment
  • Maintains and repairs heavy-duty vehicles and construction equipment, including trucks, backhoes, fire apparatus, sanitation vehicles, landscape equipment, diesel engines, small engines, and related machinery
  • Diagnoses mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and related equipment problems and determines appropriate repairs or corrective action
  • Establishes work priorities and monitors workflow to ensure the timely, efficient, and effective completion of assignments
  • Inspects completed work to ensure repairs and maintenance have been properly performed and equipment meets applicable safety and operational standards
  • Provides technical guidance, instruction, and assistance to mechanics and other employees as necessary
  • Maintains accurate service records, preventive maintenance schedules, repair orders, maintenance logs, parts records, and related documentation
  • Adjusts work assignments and priorities based on operational needs, equipment availability, emergencies, and departmental requirements
  • Obtains estimates and coordinates the purchase of parts, equipment, tools, and outside repair services as authorized
  • Coordinates with vendors and outside service providers regarding repairs, parts, warranties, and specialized mechanical services
  • Maintains an organized and safe work environment and ensures compliance with applicable safety procedures and regulations
  • Responds to emergency situations and may be required to work extended hours, weekends, holidays, or during inclement weather to support essential Township operations
  • Assists with Department of Public Works operations and other related duties as assigned

Requirements:

  • Must meet applicable NJ Department of Personnel (NJDOP) requirements for the position
  • Minimum of four (4) years of progressively responsible experience in the installation, maintenance, diagnosis and repair of motor vehicles, diesel engines, heavy-duty equipment, construction equipment, and/or related machinery
  • Possession of a valid New Jersey driver’s license is required;
    Class B CDL preferred
  • Possession of ASE certification in diesel technology or a related area
  • Must have knowledge of working on Sanitation vehicles (including but not limited to rear load and side load garbage trucks)
  • Ability to supervise employees, prioritize assignments, maintain accurate records, and communicate effectively with department personnel, vendors, and the public

Salary range: $60,320 -$101,920, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
