This position is
Permanent after probationary period, 40 hours per week, rate of pay $27.44/hr ($57,075) after one year, $28.70/hr ($59,696)

General Statement of Duties: Works as a skilled automotive mechanic; does related work as required.

Distinguishing Features of the Class:This is skilled work involving responsibility for efficient and competent performance of a variety of automotive repair, welding, and machinist tasks requiring a thorough knowledge of the trade. General instructions are received regarding what tasks to perform, permitting considerable leeway for planning the details of each assignment. Immediate supervision may be occasionally exercised over the work of unskilled or skilled laborers.

• Performs skilled operations in making general repairs on heavy motor equipment, such as but not limited to trucks, tractors, rollers, bulldozers, graders, buses and snow plows;
• Grinds valves and fits new bearings, pistons and rings;
• Adjusts connecting rods and bearings;
• Repairs or overhauls brake systems, differentials, transmissions and front and rear axles;
• Straightens and welds frames and fenders and aligns wheels;
• Occasionally operates machine shop equipment to make and repair parts of automotive equipment;
• May occasionally operate various types of motor equipment.

Required

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Thorough knowledge of standard automotive repair methods and of the terminology and tools of the trade;
• Demonstrated ability to make difficult repairs to automotive and other mechanical equipment;
• Some knowledge of welding and of the machinist trade;
• Ability to work from plans and specifications and to follow rough sketches and oral instructions;
• Ability to lay out work for self and others;
• Good motor, hand and eye coordination, manual dexterity and physical condition.

Acceptable Experience & Training: Three years of experience as a skilled heavy equipment, diesel engine mechanic, with the necessary skills to repair automobile and other automotive equipment.

Applicant must possess a current and valid New York State CDL Class A or B License is required to maintain the valid license for the duration of employment in this position
