Position: Painter (temporary)
Location: Northern

Job Description UW Facilities Maintenance & Construction has an outstanding opportunity for a Painter (Temporary). Work Schedule Full time, Monday through Friday, 6:55 a.m. to 3:25 p.m. This position is based at the Health Science Building on the Seattle campus and is not eligible for telework. This position is temporary; expected to be up to a year in duration.

Key Responsibilities – 100% Painting, Surface Preparation & Finishing
  • Prepare surfaces for painting or finishing by scraping, sanding, washing, and removing dirt, grease, old finishes, rust scale, and paint; make minor repairs to plaster, sheetrock, metal, wood, and masonry using appropriate materials.
  • Prepare work areas by moving furniture, placing protective drop cloths, and taping baseboards, glass, and other surfaces as needed.
  • Mix, blend, and apply primers, sealers, stains, undercoats, paints, epoxies, industrial enamels, and other coatings using brushes, rollers, sprayers, and striping equipment; paint machinery, piping, floors, walls, and other surfaces.
  • Prepare, finish, and refinish woodwork and casework; apply texture materials to walls and ceilings using texture machines, pumps, and hand tools.
Equipment, Access & Transportation
  • Operate and perform minor maintenance on sandblasters, power washers, stripping machines, paint sprayers, and spray booths; clean painting tools and equipment using appropriate cleaners while observing safety requirements.
  • Install, work from, and remove scaffolding, stages, planks, ladders, jacks, spider staging, and other work platforms; operate forklifts, scissor lifts, high rangers, and other machinery as required.
  • Load and unload materials and supplies and operate UW vans and trucks to transport tools, equipment, materials, and personnel to job sites.
Planning, Coordination & Customer Service
  • Develop cost estimates for installations and repairs; keep leads and supervisors informed of project status, work progress, and needed materials and equipment.
  • Communicate and coordinate with UW Facilities shops and business partners, including EH&S, Engineering Services, Design Services, Project Delivery, and UW Information Technology; provide effective, courteous, and professional customer service.
  • May instruct semiskilled workers.
Safety & Compliance
  • Know and comply with occupational health and safety regulations, including SDS instructions, HRCs, and required PPE; using respirators and protective clothing, provide required assistance in support of asbestos and lead abatement programs.
  • Comply with all UW and UW Facilities policies and procedures and M&C protocols, including Individual Accountability Protocols (IAP).
Organizational Responsibilities & Other Duties
  • Support management directives and M&C vision, values, and process improvement initiatives, including BSC, metrics, Lean principles, continuous improvement, innovation, and employee engagement; participate in meetings and training as scheduled and perform other duties as required.

OR full journey status as a painter in a union; OR four years of applicable work experience. Vocational training may be substituted for work experience on a year-for-year basis. May require valid State of Washington driver’s license. Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license, certification, and/or registration. Preferred Qualifications Demonstrated successful ability in taking direction, working well with others and as a member of a team.
