Are you mechanically inclined and ready to build a career in the heavy equipment industry? Join our team as a Undercarriage Technician and play a key role in the setup, repair, and service of track and undercarriage systems on Caterpillar equipment that keep operations moving.
This is an entry-level skilled trade opportunity where you’ll work independently and alongside experienced service mentors in a service shop environment. You’ll gain hands-on experience in undercarriage systems and equipment repair, with opportunities to grow your skills and advance into additional service areas as your experience develops. This position reports to the Shop Supervisor.
What You’ll Do:- Clean, inspect, and use specific tooling to remove, repair, and install undercarriage components and parts, including but not limited to track groups, idlers, rollers, equalizer bars, roller frames, and pivot shafts in accordance with all prescribed quality and safety standards.
- Identify the problem and cause of failure through logical troubleshooting steps.
- Test, measure, and adjust undercarriage systems and components.
- Research and determine reusability of parts in accordance with published manufacturer guidelines.
- Coordinate the ordering of replacement parts with supervisor.
- Prepare and submit detailed, complete and legible service reports of all inspection and repairs performed using prescribed forms and procedures in a timely manner.
- Keep supervisor regularly apprised of status of assigned repair jobs and assist in addressing customer questions and concerns.
- Prepare, inspect and test operate machines prior to delivery.
- Maintain work area, tools, and equipment to promote a clean and safe environment.
- Always maintain a professional and proper personal appearance.
- Keep up to date with developments in tooling, technologies and systems.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
What You Bring to the Role:
- High school diploma or GED equivalent required.
- Knowledge of equipment and tools, including their designs, uses, repair and maintenance.
- Excellent work habits, accuracy, attention to detail, and quality of work.
- Verbal and written communication skills.
- Basic torch and welding ability are a plus but not required.
- Time management skills.
- Ability to develop technical skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Ability to follow manufacturer and company installation and service guidelines to ensure quality work.
- Ability to operate hand tools, power tools, pneumatic tools, and equipment.
- Ability to be self-starting, self-motivated, and be a leader.
- Ability to make precisely coordinated movements of the fingers of one or both hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble very small objects.
- Ability to read, write, and understand information.
- Ability to listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences.
- Significant amount of time standing, walking, kneeling, crouching, stooping, climbing, and reaching
- Constant movement and use of hands, this position requires good manual dexterity.
- Communicate with customers, service managers, and co-workers
- Routinely react to visual, auditory, and other signals including alarms and instructions, and is required to visually inspect work
- Must be able to move objects and use abdominal and lower back muscles to provide support overtime without fatigue
- Be able to maneuver safely and work underneath equipment
- Frequently lifts and moves materials and equipment up to 80 lb
- Ascends/descends with gradual or continuous progress by oneself, using both hands and feet and climbs up and down ladders and/or equipment
