Job Summary

Under direct supervision performs apprentice level operator work at a water purification plant, wastewater treatment plant or pumping stations to ensure water services continuously achieve all local, state and federal regulatory requirements while simultaneously meeting customer demands.

Job Description Overview

The Water Operator Apprentice performs apprentice level work in the monitoring and operation of a water purification plant, wastewater treatment plant, or a system of pumping stations to ensure water services needs of customers are met and that quality standards established by regulatory agencies are continuously met.

Essential Functions

Assists operators as an apprentice in the operation of a water purification plant, wastewater treatment plant or a system of pumping stations to ensure continuous water service, which meets established guidelines.

Works under direct supervision and with limited independence to adjusts water treatment machinery, chemical levels, computerized pumping stations, and other related equipment to ensure a constant water supply, quality of water, and effectively treated effluent; collects grab samples and performs routine analysis to monitor water quality and ensure compliance.

Reads gauges and instruments, gathers samples, and conducts tests to ensure proper functioning of equipment and emergency response in case of failure.

Inspects equipment, checks for safety hazards, unusual conditions, and possible malfunctions to ensure continuous operation of equipment, and reduce maintenance repairs.

Maintains routine paperwork to ensure proper documentation of flows, volumes, performance graphs, and operational adjustments as required by regulatory agencies.

Collects grab samples and performs routine analysis to monitor water quality and ensure compliance.

Accepts, inspects, and ensures chemical deliveries are unloaded properly, at the correct location while adhering to established policies and protocols for chemical management.

Performs assigned clean up duties and minor preventive maintenance to maintain the facilities in a safe and effective condition; participates in various training and learning opportunities to enhance knowledge and develop strong and competent skills.

Maintains tools, vehicles, and equipment and keep parts and supplies in order.

Transports tools, materials, equipment, and supplies to work site.

Performs other work as needed or assigned.

Knowledge and Skills

Basic knowledge of chemistry.
Ability to follow directions, provide support and learn from other Water Operators.
Skill in detecting detail and observe potential hazards and dangers.
Ability to perform mathematical calculations.
Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
Ability to write reports and keep accurate records.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
Ability to work either day or night shifts, holidays, and weekends.
Ability to perform physical activities such as lifting, carrying, and walking, etc.
Ability to use hand tools.

Education

High School Diploma or GED.

Experience

One (1) year of general work experience.

Licenses and Certifications

Valid Driver’s License and good driving record. Must be able to obtain TCEQ Water System Operator Class D License within the probationary period.

Other Requirements

Subject to twenty-four/seven (24/7) emergency call-out. Availability to work various shifts including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.

Salary Range

Salary Range $44,720.00 - $47,652.80 The salary listed on this job posting is the starting salary range; amount offered will depend upon qualifications.
