Job Summary: Under the general supervision of the Division Supervisor, Equipment Operator II, and/or Public Works Manager, the employee is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of a variety of equipment and light vehicles and for performing skilled to semi-skilled maintenance tasks in any City department or division where such services are required. May also perform unskilled, routine, manual labor tasks using small hand tools.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Examples of job responsibilities may include, but are not limited to the following duties:

  • Locates water valves, water and wastewater lines and curb boxes using electronic pipe locating equipment; makes repairs to water main lines, fire hydrants, other appurtenances, and water services; makes service taps on water lines using tapping machine; installs new water lines; repairs water pumps; replace/repair plumbing fixtures, operates an electronic correlator/listening device to locate leaks in water lines; takes water samples for testing purposes;

    aides in water line pressure testing and bacteria testing; performs shoring and trenching operations; climbs water towers to a height of 80 to 100 feet.
  • Repairs, cleans and maintains sanitary sewer lines; repairs sanitary manholes using brick and mortar; enters confined spaces; repairs drain tiles as needed to insure proper drainage of sanitary sewers and ditches; trouble shoots and makes repairs on sanitary sewer lift stations; operates a sewer jet/vac vehicle to clean and maintain sanitary sewers; televises sanitary sewer lines using crawler camera equipment. Uses computer software to document sections of sanitary sewer televised.
  • Repairs streets (both asphalt and concrete), curbs, manholes and alleys by operating a jackhammer to remove sections of an area to be repaired; builds forms for concrete; finishes concrete surfaces; spreads and compacts asphalt using a hand tamp, hand roller, or diesel powered hand roller. Installs traffic control signs for construction areas; flags traffic; operates an air compressor rock drill, chainsaw, tamping machine, and various saws, both handheld and walk-behind, and various other hand tools.
  • Reads engineering drawings and marks underground utilities (e.g., water and sanitary sewer lines) and places telephone calls to the Ohio Utility Protection Service (O.U.P.S.) for marking dig locations. Performs final inspections for bonding and bond release purposes.
  • Mows grass and weeds, trims shrubs and trees; repairs water break holes, mixes and pours concrete; makes minor repairs to grass mowers, appliances, locks, doors and windows; builds partitions and false ceilings; installs floor covering; sands and finishes floors; replaces window glass. Washes windows; paints inside and outside of buildings; washes and waxes equipment.
  • Operates a pickup and/or three quarter panel truck; operates a dump truck; operates a light industrial type or farm type tractor with front end attachment.
  • Performs building maintenance tasks not limited to cleaning, painting, plumbing, framing, drywall, flooring, and landscaping;
  • Performs daily pre-trip check sheets; washes, waxes, and makes light repairs on vehicles and equipment;
  • Will be required to be on-call out/standby list for emergency situations pertaining to severe weather conditions (snow and ice, severe storms, tornados) or unforeseen events.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Some knowledge of building and grounds maintenance methods, tools, materials and supplies.
  • Some knowledge of the kind of work for which various earth-moving vehicles can be utilized in a municipal operation
  • Some knowledge in the operation of at least one of the following vehicles; a ½ ton to 8 ton dump truck, small industrial or farm type tractor, Vactor sewer vac/jet
  • Some knowledge of the hazards involved in the operation of such vehicles.
