RPM Utilities is seeking an experienced Main Line Operator Subcontractor to join our underground utility construction team. This position is responsible for safely operating heavy equipment used in the installation of main line utility systems, including excavation, trenching, grading, back filling, and material placement.

The ideal candidate has strong underground utility experience, understands line and grade requirements, and can work efficiently alongside Foremen, Pipe Layers, and other crew members.

Responsibilities
  • Operate excavators, backhoes, loaders, and other heavy equipment used for underground utility construction.
  • Perform excavation and trenching for main line utility installation.
  • Dig and maintain trenches to proper depth, width, slope, and grade.
  • Assist with installation of water, sewer, storm drainage, conduit, and related underground utility systems.
  • Work closely with Pipe Layers and Foremen to maintain proper line, grade, and production.
  • Safely lower pipe, structures, fittings, and materials into trenches.
  • Perform back filling, grading, bedding, and material placement as required.
  • Maintain safe clearances around existing underground and overhead utilities.
  • Identify changing ground conditions, utility conflicts, and other jobsite hazards.
  • Perform daily equipment inspections and report maintenance or safety concerns.
  • Maintain equipment in clean and safe operating condition.
  • Follow manufacturer operating procedures and company safety requirements.
  • Assist with jobsite setup, cleanup, and general crew duties as needed.
  • Communicate effectively with spotters, Pipe Layers, Foremen, and other equipment operators.
  • Follow OSHA excavation, trenching, and heavy equipment safety requirements.
  • Participate in daily safety meetings and toolbox talks.
  • Meet production expectations while maintaining quality and safety standards.
Qualifications
  • Minimum 2-3 years of heavy equipment operating experience in underground utility construction preferred.
  • Experience operating excavators on main line utility projects strongly preferred.
  • Experience with water, sewer, storm drainage, conduit, or similar underground utility installation.
  • Strong knowledge of excavation, trenching, grading, bedding, and back filling procedures.
  • Ability to understand line, grade, depth, slope, and elevation requirements.
  • Experience working from construction plans, stakes, lasers, or grade information preferred.
  • Strong understanding of underground utility and excavation safety.
  • Ability to safely work around active crews, trenches, traffic, and other heavy equipment.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Dependable attendance and ability to report to work on time.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish is preferred.
  • Valid driver's license preferred.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to climb on and off heavy equipment throughout the workday.
  • Ability to work around trenches, excavation areas, and active construction sites.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, climb, and perform physical labor as needed.
  • Ability to lift and carry tools, materials, and equipment when required.
  • Must be able to work early mornings, overtime, and extended hours based on project needs.
