Pay Grade 11: $39,667.56 – $51,952.32 annually. Shift premium: $2.13 per hour (3:00 p.m. – 11:00 p.m.), $1.13 per hour (11:01 p.m. – 6:59 a.m.), $2.13 per hour on weekends and holidays.
OverviewThe Kentucky Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) serves juveniles in the Commonwealth. While holding youth accountable for their actions, DJJ provides opportunities for sentenced, committed, probated, or detained youth to develop social and career skills essential for successful re‑entry into the community.
Responsibilities- Supervise and monitor activities of juveniles committed to DJJ.
- Maintain custody and control of juveniles in a custodial security setting.
- Assist juveniles in developing interpersonal skills.
- Act as a training mentor for beginning level youth workers.
- Escort juveniles between institutional areas and prevent escapes during emergencies.
- Monitor individuals entering and leaving institutional grounds.
- Maintain shift logs and notify supervisors of issues; complete incident reports as needed.
- Perform counts and wellness checks for juveniles.
- Exert physical effort to restrain residents based on behavior.
- Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
- Work overtime and any shift as required.
- Complete the Department of Juvenile Justice Training Academy (four weeks in Louisville, KY).
- Attend overnight lodging and travel required for the Assessment Training Course (ACT).
- Pass a physical examination and perform all essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
- High school graduate.
- At least two years of experience supervising and caring for young adults (ages 12‑21) in a residential, correctional, group home, detention, or day treatment program, or two years of experience providing transportation services in a community office setting to court‑committed young adults.
- College education can substitute for required experience on a year‑for‑year basis.
- Completion of the DJJ Training Academy or equivalent program approved by the Commissioner can substitute for required experience.
- No substitution of experience for education is permitted.
- Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license throughout employment.
- Must successfully complete the DJJ Training Academy within six months of appointment.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license prior to employment.
- Must maintain any required licensure, certification, or credential for the length of employment.
- Must pass a physical examination and be able to perform essential functions.
Typically works in a day treatment, group home, residential facility, or community office setting. Operations may involve hazards such as motor vehicle operation when providing transportation.
Probationary PeriodInitial and promotional probationary period of six months, except as outlined in KRS 18A.111.
