General Manager of Transportation – Smithfield, KY.
This role will oversee and manage National Transportation drivers, ensuring the operation is safe and compliant. The General Manager will support continuous driver growth and lower the company transportation expense. Responsibilities include financial reporting for assigned drivers up through the business group. Position may require travel away from home up to 10‑25%.

- Manage assigned drivers including financial KPI’s, budgets, forecasting, and P&L measurement; work with senior leaders to reduce company transportation expense.
- Review, manage and improve load efficiencies, driver work hours, loads per hour, week and month, comparing to operational KPI’s.
- Hire new drivers and improve safety, employee engagement, regulatory compliance, retention and performance management through coordination with HR and Recruiting.
- Oversee driver and equipment utilization and maintenance, maximize and measure load efficiencies, and work with the asset management team to ensure proper equipment availability.
- Implement low‑cost driver strategies including Owner‑Operator hiring to lower operational costs.
- Mentor, coach and develop the driver pool; provide and receive feedback, implement employee growth plans, manage driver progression through CHES CBPP programs, and maintain Owner‑Operator vendor scorecards.
- Properly report, investigate and manage all accidents and near‑miss incidents; drive continuous safety improvement.
- Support internal and external customers with transportation pricing and execution.
- Approve daily driver applications, including payroll review, fuel and PCard purchases, lodging, ELD HOS of service and time‑off requests.
- Dispatch and interface with assigned drivers across all regions, using TMS, ELD interface, manual schedules and WIN TMS; provide optimal customer service and communicate schedules and delays to managers and customers in real time.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Willingness to travel away from home up to 10‑25%.
- High School diploma or equivalency required;
Bachelor’s degree in related discipline preferred. - Experience with P&L.
- 5+ years of Transportation experience.
- 5 years’ experience at Manager level or higher.
- Experience in the environmental industry and knowledgeable of Environmental Industry.
- Operational experience.
- Excellent interpersonal skills.
- Strong communication skills (written and verbal).
- Good organizational skills.
- Knowledge of profit improvement.
- Able to maintain accuracy of system and report information.
- Proficiency in Windows‑based applications.
- Ability to work in a team environment.
- Very detail‑oriented.
- Ability to work with no supervision.
