General Bus Monitor

Reports to: Director of Transportation and/or Superintendent/Designee

  • Job Goal:
    Assist bus driver in ensuring the safe transportation of children.
  • Basic Function:
    Assist school bus driver in maintaining discipline while the bus is in operation; maintain proper records and documentation; assist student loading, unloading, and seating arrangements as required.
Performance Responsibilities
  • Assist children on and off the bus and escort them across streets upon return home; lift children as required; ensure responsible adults accompany students leaving the bus.
  • Assist parents and school personnel with safe loading and unloading of students; coordinate seating of students as required by State Transportation Guidelines.
  • Consult with and assist bus driver in documentation of student information, record keeping, and other required documentation.
  • Attend meetings and training courses as assigned.
  • Monitor and assist students while the bus is in operation; communicate with classroom assistants, teachers, principals, and parents concerning students’ background, medical problems, and behavior.
  • Provide and perform student health services as directed by Supervisor after receiving appropriate training as required by law.
  • Perform other tasks and responsibilities assigned by the Director of Transportation or Superintendent.
Qualifications
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Must meet Physical Performance Requirements.
  • Additional qualifications as deemed appropriate by Superintendent or Board.
  • Job Requirements
    • Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull light objects up to 25 lbs.
    • Use of hands for simple grasping and fine manipulation.
    • Meet and maintain all required certifications.
    • Work performed while standing, sitting, and/or walking.
    • Effective communication using speech, vision, written language, and hearing.
    Exceptional Children Bus Monitor (Special Education)

    Reports to: Director of Transportation

    • Job Goal:
      Assist bus driver in ensuring the safe transportation of exceptional children.
    • Basic Function:
      Ride a school bus for exceptional children and assist school bus driver in maintaining discipline while the bus is in operation; operate mechanical lift.
    Performance Responsibilities
    • Assist exceptional children on and off the bus and escort them across streets upon return home; lift children as required; ensure responsible adults accompany students leaving the bus.
    • Operate equipment, including wheelchairs, tie‑downs, seat belts, harnesses, mechanical lift, and other adaptive equipment as necessary.
    • Assist driver in ensuring seat belts, harnesses, and wheelchair clamps are secured as required.
    • Assist parents and school personnel with safe loading and unloading of students; coordinate seating of exceptional students as required by State Transportation Guidelines.
    • Coordinate communication between field drivers’ monitor office and mechanical staff.
    • Consult with and assist bus driver in documentation of student information, record keeping, and completing route surveys.
    • Attend meetings and training courses as assigned.
    • Monitor and assist students while bus is in operation; communicate with classroom aides, teachers, principals, and parents concerning students’ background, medical problems, and behavior.
    • Provide and perform student health services as directed by Supervisor after receiving appropriate training as required by law.
    • Perform other tasks and responsibilities assigned by the Director of Transportation or Superintendent.
