Job Description

SUBSTITUTE BUS MONITOR-EXCEPTIONAL CHILD

(Bus Monitor – Special Education)

Qualifications
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Must meet Physical Performance Requirements.
  • Such additional qualifications as the Superintendent or Board may find appropriate and acceptable.

Reports to: Director of Transportation

Supervises: Not Applicable

Job Goal: To assist bus driver in ensuring the safe transportation of exceptional children.

Basic Function: Ride a school bus for exceptional children and assist school bus driver in maintaining discipline while bus is in operation; operate mechanical lift.

Performance Responsibilities
  • Assists exceptional children on and off the bus and escorts children across street upon return home; lifts children as required; assures responsible adults meet students leaving the bus.
  • Operates equipment, including wheelchairs, tie‑downs, seat belts, harnesses, mechanical lift, and other adaptive equipment as necessary.
  • Assists driver in assuring seat belts, harnesses, and wheelchair clamps are secured as required.
  • Assists parent and school personnel with safe loading and unloading of students; coordinates seating of exceptional students as required by State Transportation Guidelines.
  • Coordinates communication between field drivers’ monitor office and mechanical staff.
  • Consults with and assists bus driver in documentation of student information, record keeping, and completing route surveys.
  • Attends meetings and training courses as assigned.
  • Monitors and assists students while bus is in operation; and communicates with classroom aides, teachers, principals, and parents concerning students background, medical problems, and behavior while under supervision on the bus.
  • Provides and performs student health services as directed by Supervisor after receiving appropriate training as required by law.
  • Performs such other tasks and assumes such other responsibilities as may be assigned by the Director of Transportation or Superintendent.

Term of Service: Salary and workdays/jobs to be established by the Board.

Evaluation: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on Evaluation of Classified Personnel.

Position Type: Part‑Time

Salary: $13.16 per hour

Job Requirements
  • High School/Trade School degree preferred.
  • Citizenship, residency or work visa required.
