ADMINISTRATIVE REGULATION - 7943(HC)/7942

JOB DESCRIPTION: Bus Assistant

Qualifications
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience working with young children.
  • Understand and relate to children with special needs.

REPORTS TO: Transportation Director

JOB GOALS: To assist school bus driver in maintaining discipline while bus is in operation assuring safety of students; maintain proper records and documentation; assist student loading, unloading and seating arrangements as required; and to support the Mission Statement of the Estill County School System.

Performance Responsibilities
  • Attend work daily, be in prompt attendance and remain on duty as specified by the Superintendent or the Superintendent’s designee.
  • Assists the bus driver in maintaining discipline on school bus; monitors and assists students while bus is in operation.
  • Consults with and assists bus driver in documentation of student information; record keeping and completing route surveys.
  • Assists driver in assuring seat belts, harnesses and wheel chair clamps are secured as required.
  • Assists parents and school personnel with safe loading and unloading of students; coordinates seating of pre-kindergarten students as required by State Transportation Guidelines.
  • Communicates with classroom aides, teachers, principals, and parents concerning student background, medical problems and behavior as appropriate.
  • Maintains current knowledge of Emergency Evacuation procedures.
  • Assists special needs children on and off the bus and escort children across street/road upon return home; lifts children as required; assures responsible adult meets students leaving the bus.
  • Performs post-trip check of the bus at end of route along with the driver.
  • Operates equipment, including wheelchairs, tie-downs, seat belts, harnesses, mechanical lift and other adaptive equipment as necessary.
  • Attends in-service meetings and training courses as assigned.
  • Maintains confidentiality of students and/or staff.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Days and salary pursuant to district salary schedules.
