Early Head Start/Head Start Bus Driver Job Type: Part Time, Non-Exempt

Work Hours:

20 hours per week generally, between the hours of 7:00 - 4:30 Monday through Friday. Work hours will be scheduled with the Supervisor. Compensation: $25.00 / per hour with competitive benefits package

Summary of Program and Position:

Federally funded initiatives provide early childhood education and related comprehensive services for low-income parents and children, and children with special needs. Early Head Start (EHS) provides services in centers and in homes to prenatal parents and parents with infants and toddlers. Head Start (HS) serves children ages three through five and their parents to provide a head start for school success.

The Early Head Start / Head Start Bus Driver and Custodian provides quality transportation for children and families enrolled in the program with a focus on safety and client satisfaction. The EHS/HS Bus Driver and Custodian will also ensure proper maintenance of the bus and other agency owned vehicles as assigned and in accordance with all state, federal, and EHS/HS regulations and guidelines pertaining to child and family transportation.

This position will report directly to the Support Services Supervisor.

  • Behaves in a manner that supports the agency's mission and follows personnel policies and procedures.
  • Transport children, families, and staff to and from EHS/HS classrooms and centers, socialization, field trips, and other program related activities in a safe, efficient, and timely manner to include children with disabilities. Assists passengers with boarding and disembarking in a safe and supportive manner.
  • Assure children and all passengers including children with disabilities are seated properly in their seat belts and/or harnesses while being transported and conducts child/passenger count at the start and destination to prevent children from being left behind.
  • Maintain a healthy, safe, and orderly environment on the bus and adheres to all local, state, and federal traffic laws and regulations pertaining to child and family transportation.
  • Performs pre-trip and post-trip safety inspections as required, monthly evacuation drills, reports safety and maintenance concerns, and maintains regular communication with their supervisor and/or assigned EHS/HS Management Team member prior to and following pick-ups and drop-offs.
  • Ensure the serviceability and cleanliness of school buses and program vehicles which includes, but is not limited to, inspection for mechanical defects, fueling, and cleaning of interior and exterior of buses by all appropriate means.
