** The Route Manager is responsible for overseeing daily collection operations, ensuring safe, efficient, and compliant waste collection services while delivering exceptional customer service. This role provides direct leadership to drivers and route personnel, promotes a strong safety culture, and drives operational excellence through effective route management and employee development.## Primary Duties and Responsibilities
* Manage daily route assignments and staffing to ensure all residential, commercial, and municipal customers are serviced in accordance with contractual obligations and company standards.
* Supervise, coach, and monitor drivers and route personnel to ensure safe work practices, productivity, and quality service delivery.
* Review and optimize route performance, identifying opportunities to improve efficiency, reduce overtime, and maximize productivity.
* Manage driver attendance, scheduling, and workforce utilization to support operational needs.
* Investigate and resolve missed pickups, driver errors, service failures, customer complaints, and operational issues in a timely manner.
* Conduct ride-alongs, field observations, and performance evaluations to ensure compliance with company policies and service expectations.
* Ensure compliance with Department of Transportation (DOT), OSHA, FMCSA, and company safety regulations.
* Coordinate with Safety and Human Resources to manage driver qualifications, drug and alcohol testing programs, physical examinations, licensing requirements, and ongoing training.
* Conduct investigations related to accidents, incidents, injuries, property damage, and customer complaints, implementing corrective actions and training as needed.
* Partner with Dispatch, Customer Service, Fleet Maintenance, Safety, and Operations teams to ensure seamless daily operations.
* Monitor vehicle utilization and coordinate with Fleet Maintenance to minimize downtime and maintain service continuity.
* Maintain accurate DOT documentation, driver qualification files, hours-of-service records, vehicle inspection reports, and other compliance-related records.
* Audit daily driver paperwork including route sheets, service tickets, pre-trip and post-trip inspections, timesheets, and production reports.
* Address employee relations matters in partnership with Human Resources and promote a positive, respectful, and productive work environment.
* Support recruiting, interviewing, onboarding, and retention efforts for drivers and operational personnel.
* Promote a union-free workplace while fostering employee engagement and open communication.
* Analyze operational data, route performance metrics, customer service reports, and safety trends to drive continuous improvement initiatives.
* Assist Operations Management with budgeting, cost control, labor management, and achieving operational performance goals.
* Participate in emergency response activities, weather events, and special projects as assigned.
* Perform other duties as assigned by management.## Requirements### Education
* High School Diploma or GED required.
* Associate degree or post-secondary education in Business Administration, Transportation, Logistics, Operations Management, or a related field preferred.
* Equivalent combination of education and relevant industry experience may be considered.### Experience and Competencies
* Minimum 3 years of supervisory experience within the waste, transportation, logistics, fleet, environmental services, or related industry preferred.
* Experience managing DOT-regulated employees and transportation compliance programs.
* Strong knowledge of waste collection operations, routing practices, and fleet management principles.
* Working knowledge of DOT, FMCSA, OSHA, and applicable regulatory requirements.
* Demonstrated leadership skills with the ability to motivate, coach, and develop frontline employees.
* Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities in a fast-paced operational environment.
* Excellent organizational skills with strong attention to detail and accuracy.
* Effective verbal and written communication skills.
* Ability to manage multiple priorities and adapt to changing operational demands.
