Position

Employment Training Specialist

Position Purpose

Supervises students in Community Based Instruction and Pre-vocational opportunities.

Essential Job Functions
  • Represent the district on the KentTAN committee and provide the appropriate information to relevant staff.
  • Coordinate work experience and Community based instruction for 9-12th grade special education students at both EKHS and Crossroads.
  • Make contact and secure employment opportunities for students with disabilities.
  • Support EKHS and Crossroads pre-vocational training sites through developing sites and observing and supervising students.
  • Liaison with Kent Transition Center and Kent Career Technical Center.
  • Arrange job shadow opportunities as provided in student IEPs.
  • Attend student IEPs as requested.
  • Coordinate student meetings at both EKHS and Crossroads with Michigan Rehabilitation Services
  • Community Liaison with area services including MRS, Project SEARCH, Goodwill, etc.
  • Coordinate and monitor student transportation related to employment or Transition activities as necessary.
  • Coordinate with the RAPID for student bus training when needed.
  • Remain current on all Department of Labor guidelines.
  • Regular, reliable and punctual attendance
  • Other duties as assigned by the Superintendent or designee.
Additional Duties

Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Director of Special Education, Principal, and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent.

Equipment

Uses standard office equipment such as personal computers, printers, copy and fax machines, and telephones.

Travel Requirements

Travel to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.

Knowledge

Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to read, write, and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to staff, parents, students and administrators.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving several variables.
  • Ability to work with emotionally, physically and/or mentally impaired students. Ability to maintain composure under stressful conditions.
  • Ability to develop effective working relationships with students, staff and the school community.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.
  • The employee must be highly organized and able to coordinate a number of assignments at the same time.
  • Ability to work in an economically, culturally and racially diverse environment.
Qualifications
  • Must posses a valid driver's license and dependable transportation.
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
  • Previous experience with students with disabilities or a combination of experience and post high school training.
