Laser Weld Engineer | Kentwood, MI

Salary Range: $81,000 - $121,000 depending on experience

The Opportunity

We are collaborating with manufacturing firms in Kentwood that are seeking skilled Laser Weld Engineers. Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and optimize laser welding processes for new and existing products.
  • Design and implement laser weld tooling and fixtures.
  • Troubleshoot laser welding equipment and process issues.
  • Conduct root cause analysis for weld defects and implement corrective actions.
  • Collaborate with design and manufacturing teams to ensure weldability and manufacturability.
  • Perform process validation and qualification activities.
  • Create and maintain detailed process documentation and work instructions.
Recommended Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Welding Engineering, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • 3+ years of experience in laser welding processes and applications within a manufacturing environment.
  • Strong understanding of metallurgical principles, material science, and weldability of various alloys (e.g., stainless steels, aluminum, titanium).
  • Proficiency in laser welding equipment operation, programming, and maintenance, including experience with various laser types (fiber, CO2, Nd:

    YAG).
  • Demonstrated ability to optimize weld parameters, troubleshoot defects, and implement process improvements for quality and efficiency.
  • Experience with weld inspection techniques (visual, destructive, NDT) and relevant quality standards (e.g., ISO, AWS).
Bonus Qualifications
  • Experience with advanced laser technologies (e.g., ultrafast lasers, fiber lasers beyond standard CW).
  • Proficiency in optical design software (e.g., Zemax, FRED) for laser beam delivery systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to implement automation and robotics in laser welding processes.
  • Familiarity with non-destructive testing (NDT) methods for weld quality assessment (e.g., X-ray, CT scanning).
  • Black Belt or Green Belt certification in Lean Six Sigma.
