Join our Public Works team! The City of Kentwood is seeking a Building Maintenance Technician I to help maintain and repair City-owned buildings and facilities.
In this role, you’ll perform a variety of hands-on maintenance tasks across multiple trades, including HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and general building systems. This is a great opportunity for someone who enjoys working with their hands, solving problems, and contributing to the upkeep of essential community facilities.
What You ll Do- Maintain City buildings, including roofs, ceilings, floors, drywall, windows, doors, and lighting
- Perform painting, repairs, and general facility upkeep
- Inspect, operate, maintain, and repair HVAC systems
- Complete plumbing and electrical maintenance and repairs
- Maintain office furniture, fixtures, and equipment
- Perform maintenance on park facilities such as restrooms, pavilions, and athletic equipment
- Assist with pest control and graffiti removal
- Support custodial operations and contractor oversight
- Operate and maintain tools, equipment, and small inventory of supplies
- Prepare reports and maintain records of work performed
- Provide basic assistance and information to the public
- Collaborate with team members and assist other Public Works divisions as needed
- High school diploma or GED
- Two (2) years of skilled trades experience in installation, maintenance, or repair work (or equivalent combination of training and experience)
- Basic knowledge of HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and general building maintenance
- Ability to safely operate tools, equipment, and vehicles
- Ability to read and interpret manuals, drawings, and blueprints
- Michigan CDL Class A with Tanker ("N") endorsement (or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire)
Hourly pay range: $22.40 – $28.62, depending on qualifications and experience

The Department of Public Works keeps the City of Kentwood beautiful and functional with a team of nearly 40 full- and part-time employees. The department has five divisions that work together to maintain the City’s infrastructure, including more than 150 miles of pipes underground and more than 155 miles of streets above ground, as well as the City parks and grounds, buildings and fleet of vehicles.
DPW handles snow plowing, street cleaning, parks maintenance, and police cruisers. The five divisions are building maintenance, fleet services, grounds maintenance, streets maintenance, and utilities (water and wastewater) services.
