PositionWe are currently seeking an experienced Roadway Design Engineer to grow our Transportation Practice in our Kernersville, NC office. Remote candidates located in North Carolina will also be considered.
Salary and BenefitsSalary: $110,000‑155,000, based on experience, certifications, and regional market standards. Benefits:

- Perform engineering design tasks for roadway projects from preliminary to final design.
- Develop specifications, cost estimates, and prepare final bid packages.
- Establish working relationships with client technical staff and project managers, especially within NCDOT, local governments, and private clients.
- Provide design services for traditional design‑bid‑build and design‑build transportation projects.
- Mentor and assist junior engineers in developing final design plans, including cross sections, traffic control, drainage, and signing/pavement marking plans.
- Coordinate design activities and meetings between design staff, subcontractors, and client managers.
- Participate in project decisions regarding technical approaches, cost, and scheduling performance.
- Identify schedule and cost variances and develop corrective action recommendations.
- Complete tasks within schedule and budget with cross‑discipline teams.
- Serve in leadership roles in transportation‑related organizations such as ASHE, ASCE, DBIA, etc.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering.
- P.E. license required;
North Carolina PE preferred. Successful candidates will be expected to obtain their NC PE within the first year of hire. - 10 to 20+ years of progressive engineering experience with broad knowledge in transportation and roadway design.
- 5+ years of project management experience.
- Experience working on DOT design projects; experience with multiple DOTs is a plus.
- Proficiency with Micro Station, Geopak, and Open Roads Designer software.
- DOT design project experience and coordination with client technical staff and project managers.
- Project management, scheduling, budgeting, and cost estimating.
- Design‑build and traditional design‑bid‑build project delivery.
- Leadership, mentoring, and cross‑discipline team collaboration.
- Excellent communication.
This role offers the opportunity to make a direct impact on our expanding Transportation Practice by leading roadway design efforts that support safer, more connected communities. You will collaborate with experienced technical teams, partner with public and private clients, and deliver projects from early design through final bid packages. Mentoring junior engineers and contributing to the growth of a practice with national reach will be a key part of your contribution.
