BriefJob Description
Perform highly complex vocational nursing work. Provide care, treatment, and general welfare for individuals residing at the State Hospital who have complex mental health, behavioral, and medical conditions. Perform basic and complex routine and non‑routine nursing tasks; collect specimens for lab work and conduct health screenings. Instruct psychiatric nursing assistants and other staff on service and care that support individual needs.
Perform technical nursing procedures in accordance with facility and state regulations. Keep informed of and follow all agency, state hospital, and hospital policies and procedures. Provide direction and assist with on‑the‑job training for newly hired LVNs and direct care staff. Assist Registered Nurses (RNs) in implementing protocols, procedures, and programs to improve overall health and safety of staff and individuals.
Work under general supervision of an RN with moderate latitude for initiative and independent judgment.
Other duties as assigned may include participation in disaster response, recovery, or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation, which may require alternate shift patterns or locations.
Essential Job Functions (EJFs)- Attend work on a regular basis and may be asked to work specific shift schedules, including rotating, extended, or overtime shifts, following agency leave policy.
- Administer medications and treatments orally, rectally, internally, or by injection.
- Assist medical staff (RNs, Physicians, Advanced Practice Registered Nurses, Physician Assistants) in examining and caring for patients.
- Make rounds as needed and work in other locations at the hospital.
- Demonstrate competency in performing complex technical nursing tasks and procedures per HHSC, hospital, and state regulations.
- Train and instruct new LVN staff in nursing functions, acclimating them to patients and describing needs and preferences.
- Perform complex and technical nursing procedures such as wound care and breathing treatments.
- Collect specimens for laboratory examination and conduct screening tests when requested.
- Monitor individuals’ weight, diet, meals, vital signs, and health status after medication administration, treatments, and procedures.
- Instruct psychiatric nursing assistants on post‑treatment or procedure monitoring.
- Document and report treatments and observations accurately in the individual’s medical record (electronic health record or paper chart).
- Recognize symptoms of illness and report accurately to RN and/or Primary Care Provider.
- Foster interdisciplinary collaboration, communicating pertinent information orally and in writing to team members.
- Serve as a resource and mentor for new LVNs, assisting RN supervisors with on‑the‑job instruction.
- Assist RNs with protocol implementation and quality assurance programs.
- Provide information and education to individuals in accordance with recovery plans during procedures and treatments.
- Ensure supplies are available in advance, taking inventory and ordering supplies as needed.
- Respond to emergency situations and follow safety and infection control procedures.
- Perform other duties as assigned, including participation in disaster response, recovery, or COOP activation, which may require alternate shift patterns or locations.
- Knowledge of nursing care standards, procedures, and techniques for appropriate patient care.
- Knowledge of emergency procedures and equipment (e.g., CPR) and ability to assess and care for residents in emergency situations.
