Security Sergeant Supervisor SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES

The Security Sergeant Supervisor of Campus Security provides leadership and supervision for all Campus Security Officers on the assigned shift, assures the efficiency and effectiveness of shift personnel, and assures that shift personnel maintain currency in required certification and attend scheduled training.

This employee makes assignments, communicates pertinent information such as changes in policy and procedure, communicates information from the shift going off duty, and briefs oncoming shift personnel regarding information relevant to the current shift, performs annual performance evaluations for assigned employees, developing improvement plans as needed, documenting corrective actions, and giving commendations when commendable service is observed or reported. The Security Sergeant Supervisor is responsible for ensuring shift personnel are well informed concerning departmental policies and procedures and that the policy and procedures are followed during their shifts.

The employee maintains attendance records and checks time sheets, reviews written reports for accuracy and prepares various reports.

This position will work the evening shift during peak periods of the calendar year (fall and spring terms). The position shift will change during non‑peak periods throughout the calendar year and as required by the Assistant Chief of Campus Security or Chief of Security.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Works closely with Assistant Chief of Campus Security and Chief of Security on the daily operations to ensure timely and accurate processing and preparedness of department needs.
  • Is knowledgeable of and act in compliance with the University’s policies and procedures, and state and federal regulations and guidelines.
  • Maintains and organizes office in a safe, neat, and clean workspace.
  • Fosters good campus-security relations among students, faculty, and staff on campus.
  • Works collaboratively with the Offices of Residence Life and Facilities Services (as well as others) as appropriate.
  • Productively participates either as a member on University committees, as appropriate.
  • Assists the Chief with various special projects, including those directed by the President.
  • Understands and works to maintain compliance with local, state, and federal standards and law that impact the university.
  • Maintains skills and knowledge through professional associations and resources.
  • Contribute to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.
  • Acts to facilitate good communication between employees, clients, students, and management through interpersonal and professional communication techniques.
  • Maintain University safety rules.
  • Attend division/department meetings as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS REQUIRED
  • High School Diploma or equivalent is required;
    Bachelor’s degree is preferred.
  • Three years of experience in safety, security, law enforcement, and/or emergency services are required.
  • One year of supervisory experience is required. Additional experience in supervision, loss prevention, traffic control, parking, emergency medicine, fire safety, knowledge of safety practices/procedures, hazardous material recognition, incident command, radio communications, and familiarity with emergency operations is preferred.
  • Relevant experience, preferably in higher education.
  • Ability to exercise a high degree of accurate and independent judgment, tact and discretion, and exercise good judgment in evaluating situations and making decisions.
  • High degree of integrity with the ability to handle confidential and sometimes highly sensitive matters in the appropriate manner.
  • Proven ability to develop effective working relationships with diverse individuals and groups.
  • Demonstrated leadership and management abilities.
  • Proven ability to effectively resolve conflicts involving individuals at all organizational levels; mediation experience preferred.
  • Organizational, interpersonal, written and oral communication skills.
  • Proven ability to accomplish all tasks independently and with minimal supervision.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and Adobe programs including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Adobe Acrobat and Adobe Sign.
  • Must have a valid Texas driver’s license, related insurance and good driving record.
