Job Description
The Security Officer performs complex, journey‑level security work and is responsible for maintaining a secure and protective environment at a state hospital. You will observe, take action, and report incidents or security violations involving patients, and initiate emergency response when appropriate. Patrolling, monitoring alarms and surveillance cameras, checking credentials at the campus gate, and handling after‑hours emergency calls are all part of the core mission to enhance the safety of patients, employees, and visitors.
EssentialJob Functions
- Attend work regularly and may be required to work a specific or rotating shift schedule, overtime, or extended shift, in accordance with agency leave policy.
- Monitor surveillance cameras for unauthorized persons, fires, and unusual occurrences; report emergencies immediately.
- Conduct routine patrols of buildings and grounds to maintain safety.
- Disseminate and coordinate emergency responses; notify hospital management and law enforcement as appropriate.
- Assist in the apprehension of suspects when safely possible, such as in cases of unauthorized entry or malicious mischief.
- Prepare timely and accurate incident and investigative reports related to emergencies or violations.
- Evaluate and recommend changes to security regulations to improve safety measures.
- Participate in disaster response, recovery, or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation, which may require alternate shift patterns or locations.
Skills and Abilities
(KSAs)
- Knowledge of building or premises security and use of surveillance equipment.
- Knowledge of rules and regulations for building admissions, exits, and alarm devices.
- Strong oral and written communication skills, including writing incident and investigative reports.
- Skill in administering CPR.
- Ability to communicate with potentially aggressive patients, visitors, and employees.
- Ability to patrol grounds, detect danger, and take appropriate action.
- Ability to prepare concise reports.
- Ability to remain calm, reasonable, and react quickly in an emergency situation.
- Must possess a valid Texas driver license or obtain it no later than 90 days after hire date to drive a state vehicle. Applicants with an out‑of‑state license must provide an original certified driving record.
- CPR certified or ability to obtain certification within 6 months.
Two years of work experience in security, law enforcement, or military is preferred.
Additional Information- Applicants must pass a fingerprint criminal background check, pre‑employment drug screen, and registry checks.
- Males between the ages of 18‑25 must be registered with the Selective Service.
- All applicants must be at least 18 years of age to be considered for employment at a state‑operated facility;
Waco Center for Youth applicants must be 21 years of age. - Flexibility in work hours may be required; overtime and extended hours may be necessary.
- Compliance with HHSC immunization policy and state hospital operating procedures related to immunizations is required. Employees must be vaccinated according to their level of contact, and may be required to wear a mask if not vaccinated for influenza.
