Job Location: Kerrville State Hospital, 721 Thompson Dr, Kerrville, TX
Harris & Human Services Commission (HHSC) operates nine psychiatric hospitals, one youth residential treatment facility, and thirteen state supported living centers across Texas, all accredited by the Joint Commission. The Kellerville State Hospital provides forensic mental health and complex psychiatric care.
Responsibilities- Perform advanced restoration, renovation, building maintenance, and construction work in designated skilled trades.
- Conduct inspections, adjustments, repairs, and maintenance on building systems, including doors, locks, hardware, fire alarm and sprinkler systems, carpentry, painting, electrical, and utility systems.
- Operate and maintain motorized vehicles and equipment such as backhoes, forklifts, and other machinery.
- Process paperwork related to work orders, projects, material requisitions, and maintain accurate records.
- Act as a lead worker: provide training, guidance, assign and prioritize workload, oversee repairs or renovations, and ensure projects comply with applicable codes and standards.
- Inspect contractor work to ensure contract compliance.
- Participate in disaster response, recovery, or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation as required, which may involve alternate shift patterns or location assignments.
- Perform other duties as assigned by supervisors.
- Attend work regularly, adhere to shift schedules including rotating schedules, extended shift, and overtime as per agency policy.
- Maintain, test, troubleshoot, and repair components of fire alarm and sprinkler systems, doors, and related hardware.
- Design and execute repair and renovation projects that conform to codes and standards; select appropriate materials, tools, and manpower.
- Conduct in-process inspections to ensure proper execution of work.
- Operate machinery and tools safely, following established safety protocols.
- Train staff on proper procedures and maintain training records.
- Maintain safe, uninterrupted services to campus operations and programs.
- Knowledge of building maintenance and operations, building systems, and grounds management.
- Expertise in repairing, assembling, installing, and testing fire alarm and sprinkler systems.
- Knowledge of industrial safety, fire and safety regulations.
- Proficiency with hand tools, power tools, and test equipment.
- Skill in preventive maintenance, building inspections, and material estimation.
- Ability to apply proper methods, techniques, and procedures in repair and maintenance.
- Ability to interpret drawings, schematics, and sketches.
- Ability to organize preventive maintenance programs and provide direction to others.
- Strong independent work ethic and teamwork skills.
- Problem‑solving, decision‑making, and sound judgment.
- Effective oral and written communication skills.
- Vocational training in at least one of the following trades is required: electrical, plumbing, masonry, mechanical equipment, locksmithing, painting, motor vehicle maintenance, grounds keeping, equipment maintenance, HVAC, carpentry, welding, or electronic cabling AND a minimum of two years’ experience in any of these trades.
- OR a minimum of four years’ experience in construction, maintenance, or equipment/vehicle repair work where the applicant has experience in at least two of the above trades listed.
