The Vehicle Driver II performs senior‑level motor vehicle operations under the supervision of the Regional Laundry Director. Major duties include:
- Operating tractor‑trailers or medium‑duty trucks to transport linens between state‑owned facilities.
- Following a predetermined schedule to deliver and pick up cargo, ensuring safe, sanitary handling and adherence to facility rules, regulations, and state traffic laws.
- Maintaining the cleanliness and sanitation of the vehicle and cargo space.
- Completing and maintaining records of vehicle operations, including Driver’s Vehicle Inspection Reports, Miles Logs, and shipping forms.
- Executing preventive maintenance checks on vehicles and trailers, filing reports, and reporting any issues promptly.
- Coordinating with the Regional Laundry Director and Laundry Manager for load planning, cart management, and crew scheduling.
- Providing vehicle operation and safety training to new staff and assisting in inventory management.
- Participating in disaster response, recovery, or COOP activation as required, which may involve alternate shift patterns or locations.
- Attend work regularly, following specific shift schedules, including rotating schedules, extended shifts, and overtime as per agency policy.
- Operate an over‑the‑road tractor‑trailer and any other Texas Department of Transportation‑approved vehicle safely and in compliance with all laws.
- Secure and load cargo, tie‑down materials, and maintain safety standards to prevent damage to vehicles and cargo.
- Process paperwork promptly and accurately, including cleaning logs, fibers logs, and shipping forms.
- Deliver cargo safely and on time, ensuring proper load distribution and adherence to vehicle capacity limits.
- Maintain the cleanliness and maintenance of the trailer interior, exterior, and equipment, following prescribed cleaning protocols.
- Serve as a backup and assist in supervising Laundry Workers I–III as directed.
- Perform additional duties as assigned, which may include disaster and COOP support.
- Knowledge of safe motor‑vehicle operations, preventive maintenance, and cargo handling protocols.
- Knowledge of Texas Department of Transportation rules and regulations.
- Knowledge of infection control policies and safety materials.
- Skill in operating tractor‑trailer combinations and medium‑duty vehicles.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills for interacting with internal and external stakeholders.
- Physical stamina, hand‑to‑eye coordination, and the ability to lift 40–50 pounds and maneuver loaded carts up to 57” tall, 28” deep, 48” wide.
- Ability to use lift gates, pallet jacks, forklifts, or other loading equipment.
- Ability to train others, identify problems and propose solutions, and maintain accurate records.
- Proficiency with Office 365, webmail, and basic computer applications.
- Ability to work in all weather conditions and under limited visibility using mirrors and spotters.
- Valid Texas driver’s license class C or higher.
- Out‑of‑state drivers must submit a certified driving record.
- Class A commercial driver’s license (CDL) and medical card required for tractor‑trailer operation.
- Completion of HHSC Defensive Driving Course and maintenance of certification.
- Annual driving record assessment for continued eligibility.
Eighteen months of experience operating motor vehicles on a commercial basis.
