Job Purpose:
To provide direct, non-judgmental reading support to students working below grade level under the guidance of certified teachers. By delivering structured, small-group and one-on-one literacy activities, the Paraprofessional helps bridge learning gaps, build reading confidence, and create an encouraging environment where struggling readers can thrive.
Duties, Responsibilities and Accountabilities:
1. Instruction:
Small Group & 1-on-1 Support. Lead daily practice sessions in foundational reading skills (phonics, sight words, vocabulary, and reading fluency) following lesson plans provided by the ELL teacher or classroom teacher. Provide instruction and programs that meets students' individual needs, abilities and interests. Develops Individual Learning Plans (ILPs) for eligible students. Develop students' functional English speaking and reading skills.
2. Teamwork:
Performs other related duties as required or assigned. Works cooperatively with school employees, students and visitors.
3. Administration:
Administers the State mandated ESL assessment(s), and maintains files and records.
4. Child Supervision:
Must be able to deal with a wide variety of students. May perform supervision duties as assigned by the building administrator. May supervise students at restrooms, in the cafeteria, and on the playground.
Requirements:
1. Requires High School Diploma and advanced training.
2. Requires a thorough understanding of classroom management skills and methods of dealing with youth who may have behavior issues.
3. Requires a willingness to perform various job-related duties. A strong sense of teamwork and the ability to work cooperatively with others is essential.
4. Requires skill in conducting tutorial sessions and using various media to help the student with regular classroom assignments.
5. Requires ability to keep accurate records and track student attendance.
6. Requires pre-service and in-service training programs.
7. Requires the ability to maintain confidentiality.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Language
Skills:
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before parents, staff and students.
Mathematical Skill:
Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
Reasoning Ability:
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
Problem Solving:
Can identify and resolve problems in a timely manner. Works well in group problem solving situations. Uses reason even when dealing with emotional topics.

Manages difficult or emotional situations in a positive manner. Responds promptly to student needs. Responds to requests for service and assistance and meets commitments.
