General Labor, Heavy Equipment Mechanic
Under the general supervision of the Transit Maintenance Supervisor, the Transit Vehicle Service Worker is responsible for maintaining the interior and exterior cleanliness and sanitation of transit fleet vehicles, as well as assisting maintenance personnel with routine inspections, fluid checks, and basic preventative maintenance. This position plays a key role in ensuring vehicles are clean, safe, and ready for service in compliance with regulatory and agency standards.
Examplesof Duties
- Operates bus wash system, pressure washers, and other cleaning tools, ensuring correct use to prevent damage to equipment and vehicles.
- Cleans and sanitizes the interior of buses and support vehicles, including sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, washing windows, wiping down surfaces, removing graffiti, and addressing biohazard spills in accordance with safety procedures.
- Conducts exterior washing and detailing of transit vehicles as assigned, including bug and tar removal and wheel cleaning.
- Assists mechanics with diesel particulate filter (DPF) regeneration cycles, following established mechanical protocols.
- Checks, replenishes, and documents vehicle fluids (engine oil, coolant, windshield wash, etc.) under direction and supervision.
- Utilizes safe work practices aligned with OSHA, Borough, and transit industry standards; ensures work spaces are clean, organized, and free of hazards.
- Tracks and maintains inventory of cleaning supplies and notifies supervisor when restocking is necessary.
- Operates forklift and safely moves transit vehicles on Borough property for servicing or staging.
- Enters accurate maintenance records into fleet management software systems and assists with reporting as needed.
- Participates in required safety training, certifications, and continuing education to stay current with industry practices.
- Provides informal guidance and training to new or temporary staff regarding cleaning procedures, safety standards, and maintenance support duties when certified and appropriate.
- Reports observed damage, mechanical irregularities, or safety concerns to a mechanic or the supervisor immediately.
- Performs other related duties as assigned to support Transit operations and facility maintenance.
- Hear, see (including close, distance, color, peripheral vision, and depth perception), and adjust focus.
- Use hands and arms for handling tools and equipment; reach overhead and work in confined spaces.
- Perform physical activities including climbing, balancing, kneeling, crouching, lifting, and carrying up to 50 lbs frequently and will be trained in proper lifting technique.
- Stand, walk, bend, stoop, or sit for extended periods.
- Demonstrated understanding of vehicle maintenance and sanitation standards.
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions and interpret service manuals or technical procedures.
- Basic computer skills to enter data into maintenance management systems and perform recordkeeping duties.
- Willingness to attend and actively participate in safety, equipment, or industry-specific training programs.
- Ability to work independently and cooperatively with others in a team environment.
- Strong interpersonal skills for effective interaction with staff, management, and the public.
- Must maintain a valid driver’s license throughout employment.
- Must possess or be able to obtain a State of Alaska Class B Commercial Drivers License (CDL) with passenger endorsement.
This is a safety‑sensitive position subject to FTA and USDOT drug and alcohol testing regulations. Pre‑employment testing and ongoing compliance with the Borough’s substance abuse policy is required. Applicants must sign a consent form authorizing the Borough to request DOT drug and alcohol testing records from former employers within the past two years. Failure to comply may result in revocation of a job offer.
Education and Experience- High school diploma or GED preferred.
- Experience in vehicle detailing, janitorial work, or fleet cleaning operations preferred.
- Specialized training or experience in vehicle maintenance or public transit operations is desirable.
- Any combination of related education and/or related experience will be considered if the candidate possesses the demonstrated ability.
