Neets Bay Hatchery Maintenance Technician

Full Time, Hourly

Southern Southeast Regional Aquaculture Association (SSRAA) is recruiting for full‑time maintenance technician at the Neets Bay Hatchery, a remote hatchery located approximately 30 air miles from Ketchikan, Alaska. The Neets Bay Hatchery program includes approximately 140 million chum salmon and 3.5 million coho salmon. This position requires living on site in furnished subsidized rental housing. Utilities include but are not limited to: weekly mail and supply flights, satellite internet, and R&R hotel accommodation in Ketchikan.

Work consists of maintenance and repairs associated with 9 residential buildings, a bunkhouse, a shop/office building, a hatchery building, rolling stock, various boats and outboards, a hydro‑electric generator and two diesel generators, a large dock and multiple netpen complexes, multiple barges as well as other infrastructure associated with a small community.

Neets Bay Hatchery Summary of Position:
Under the direct supervision of the department management team. Performs required maintenance and construction functions as assigned by the hatchery management team. Also as assigned, shares responsibility for the performance of the preventative maintenance program, repair of equipment, construction projects and maintain an adequate parts and supplies inventory. Responsibilities & Duties:
  • Assists with the maintenance and repair at the hatchery. Organizes and records maintenance schedules on major equipment as assigned. Provides input on maintenance and repair needs for annual and mid‑year budget documents. Assists with maintenance and repair summary due management at the end of the month.
  • Assists with a variety of construction and fabrication projects at the hatchery. Assists in the development of plans and material lists for projects as assigned. Orders supplies for projects as assigned.
  • Perform other duties as assigned which may include fish culture duties as needed, such as but not limited to: harvest, eggtake, and ponding.
Requirements Skills & Abilities

Required:
  • Successful work history multiple trades including skills in plumbing, welding, electrical, mechanical repairs, and carpentry.
  • Experience in construction and maintenance projects.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel or compatible equivalent.
Preferable, but not required skills and experience:
  • Working knowledge of fish culture practices and hatchery operations
  • Small boat operation
  • Rigging experience

Physical demands:

Position requires physical/repetitive work, the ability to stand and walk for long periods of time. Must be able to lift, carry, push, pull, stoop, bend over, stretch, climb and sometimes work in confined spaces. Ability to lift and carry in excess of 50 lbs.

Work environment:

Will require working indoors around cold running water sometimes in low light conditions with high ambient noise and working outdoors in inclement weather often around water. Some travel by boat and seaplane is required.
