Department: The Salvation Army, Gateway Corps

Reports To: Gateway Corps Officer

FLSA Status: Part-Time / 29 hours per week;
Non-exempt

Scope of Position: The Social Service Coordinator is responsible for overseeing and executing the Corps social service program. This includes, but is not limited to, interviewing and assisting clients, distributing food boxes, and making recommendations for financial aid to Officers for approval. They organize and maintain the various pantries and refrigerators, ensuring cleanliness and adherence to food safety regulations. They oversee the soup kitchen, including placing supply orders, securing volunteers, enforcing food safety regulations, and cooking when volunteers are not available.

The Social Service Coordinator also oversees all USDA Commodity reporting and distribution, assists with general office work, record-keeping, and statistical reporting.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Minimum 1 year of work experience in a Social Services position.
  • High School Diploma or Equivalency.
  • Ability to complete any and all assigned trainings.
  • Work well independently and in a detailed, professional, and courteous manner.
  • Work on a dynamic, high-performing small team.
  • Work independently to meet goals set by leadership.
  • Current food handler’s card or willingness and ability to obtain a card within 30 days of placement.
  • At least 21 years of age with a current driver’s license and acceptable driving and criminal history reports.
Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
  • Fast learner able to keep pace with multiple priorities.
  • Flexible and open to new ideas, concepts, and ways of doing things.
  • Ability to interact positively and gracefully with others.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel), multiline telephone system, and general office equipment; capable of performing basic mathematical calculations.
Essential Job Functions
  • Ensure client health and safety while maintaining clean, safe work areas.
  • Communicatively interact with clients, supervisors, and co‑workers.
  • Supervise volunteers in accordance with The Salvation Army policies and procedures.
  • Keep the kitchen, pantries, refrigerators, and dining areas clean and tidy.
  • Maintain daily temperature logs.
  • Answer the telephone as needed.
  • Use equipment and systems such as a computer, reporting software, phone, and time clock.
  • Be proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Show up on time and be flexible with hours; provide additional help when needed.
  • Maintain statistics and ensure the numbers are accurate and reported promptly.
  • Administer the USDA Commodities Program and Emergency Food Program.
  • Inventory control and record keeping.
  • Maintain and input forms and applications.
  • Distribute food.
  • Complete monthly reports.
  • Train and supervise volunteers.
  • Enter and maintain stats in Well Sky and other requested systems.
  • Maintain a positive attitude when speaking with and collaborating with clients, partner agencies, volunteers, and coworkers.
  • Coordinate/develop donor partnerships with local grocers and food distributors; maintain an excellent, responsive rapport with donors, scheduling pickups and taking products in a way helpful to vendors.
  • Operate The Salvation Army vehicle as needed to pick up food from Food Bank distribution points and/or deliver food and supplies.
  • Maintain mileage logs, gas receipts, and inspect the Food Bank vehicles daily for safety or maintenance issues and report them to management.
  • Assist with Adopt a Family, Angel Tree, and seasonal toy and food distributions.
  • Attend required trainings, including Protect the Mission child safety training, CPR certification, and fleet safety training.
  • Attend all orientation meetings/classes.
  • Maintain professional appearance and adhere to dress code policies.
  • Maintain FEMA files in accordance with all policies and best practices.
  • Assist in accurate recording of monthly Gift-in-Kind (GIK).
