Job Overview

Patient Sitter – Medical (Per Diem/Relief) at Peace Health Ketchikan Medical Center, Ketchikan, AK.

Salary range: $18.08 - $27.12 per hour (variable).

Peace Health has been serving the Southeast Alaska community since 1923. Ketchikan Medical Center is a 25‑bed critical‑access hospital offering comprehensive trauma care, outpatient and home health services, and a long‑term care facility.

Responsibilities
  • Provide continuous visual monitoring of assigned patient(s) and verbally redirect from at‑risk behaviors.
  • Coordinate relief when leaving a patient’s room to maintain constant observation.
  • Support patients, including verbal explanations, and summon nursing staff as needed for activity or ADLs.
  • Escalate safety concerns to clinical staff when a patient poses a threat to self or others.
  • Ensure patient’s primary language is recorded when it is not English.
  • Identify and report potential safety hazards, remove hazards, and document findings with the charge nurse.
  • Participate in safe hand‑off during shift changes.
Qualifications
  • High School Diploma Preferred or equivalent.
  • 1 year Preferred of patient care experience.
  • Required:

    Basic Life Support certification.
Working Conditions
  • Patient handling no greater than 35 lbs (NIOSH), with fine motor skills to control medical equipment.
  • Push/Pull up to 45 lbs force (e.g., medical carts).
  • Hands‑on CPR: up to 20 minutes using 100–125 lbs force; frequency seldom or occasionally.
  • Repeated bending, stooping, squatting, reaching, kneeling; frequent sitting.
Environmental Conditions
  • Exposure to biohazard, body fluids and airborne particles.
  • Ability to work in a noisy environment.
Mental/Visual
  • Vision and hearing within normal limits (glasses, contacts, hearing aids permitted).
  • Good communication and accurate information exchange.
